The family department of invented words in German

Invent affectionate German names for recognisable family habits. These playful compounds need not be dictionary entries, but they still follow German word-building patterns: the final noun supplies the grammatical identity, while context supplies the connection between the parts.

What you'll learn

  • Create understandable, playful determinative noun compounds for shared family habits.
  • Use the right-hand head to determine a compound's gender, plural and case endings.
  • Explain competing internal bracketings of a multi-part compound.
  • Use hyphens to improve readability without assuming they settle every ambiguity.
  • Distinguish established linking-element patterns from arbitrarily inserted sounds.

German phrases for the family department of invented words

  • Wir haben versehentlich einen Ausschuss fürs Aufschieben von Bagatellentscheidungen gegründet.

We've accidentally founded a committee for postponing minor decisions.

Bagatellentscheidungen gives small decisions a comically bureaucratic name; Entscheidungen remains the head.

  • Für deine zeremonielle Schlüsselsuche muss es doch ein deutsches Kompositum geben.

Surely there's a German compound for your ceremonial key search.

Schlüsselsuche is established German; a family could playfully extend it to Schlüsselsuchzeremonie.

  • Heißt das nun ein Schrank für Notfallkekse oder ein Schrank für den Notfall?

Does that mean a cupboard for emergency biscuits or an emergency cupboard?

Imagine discussing Notfallkeksschrank: are the biscuits reserved for emergencies, or is the biscuit cupboard itself for emergency use?

  • Das letzte Substantiv verrät uns, was für eine Art von Ding wir erfunden haben.

The last noun tells us what sort of thing we've invented.

A Schlüsselsuchzeremonie is a kind of Zeremonie, not a kind of Schlüssel.

  • Dieser zusätzliche Fugenlaut gehört da nicht hin, nur weil er lustig klingt.

That extra linking sound doesn't belong there just because it's funny.

Linking elements follow established word-building patterns; they are not freely inserted decorations.

  • Setz einen Bindestrich – selbst unsere Familie braucht eine faire Chance, das zu entziffern.

Put a hyphen in; even our family needs a fighting chance.

A readability hyphen can make a long invention easier to process: Bagatellentscheidungs-Aufschiebeausschuss.

  • Dein neues Wort ist absurd, präzise und leider unverzichtbar.

Your new word is ridiculous, precise and unfortunately indispensable.

A successful family coinage captures a familiar pattern without needing a dictionary definition.

  • Geben wir der Angewohnheit einen Namen, ohne die Person dahinter zur Zielscheibe des Witzes zu machen.

Let's name the habit without making its owner the punchline.

Name the shared situation rather than attaching an unkind label to a family member.

Key words

das Kompositum; plural: die Komposita

compound word

The compounds here are determinative: the first component narrows or characterises the head.

der Ausschuss; plural: die Ausschüsse

committee

As a final head, it gives a coinage masculine gender and the plural ending and umlaut of Ausschüsse.

die Bagatellentscheidung; plural: die Bagatellentscheidungen

decision about a minor matter

A transparent, bureaucratic-sounding compound suitable for the family's mock committee.

die Schlüsselsuche; plural: die Schlüsselsuchen

search for keys

Schlüssel + Suche, with no additional linking -s-.

die Schlüsselsuchzeremonie; plural: die Schlüsselsuchzeremonien

ceremonial key-search ritual

A playful coinage headed by die Zeremonie; the internal stem is Schlüsselsuch-.

der Notfallkeksschrank; plural: die Notfallkeksschränke

emergency-biscuit cupboard / emergency biscuit-cupboard

An intentionally ambiguous coinage; der Schrank determines gender and plural.

das Fugenelement; plural: die Fugenelemente

linking element

An element such as -s- or -n- occurring between components in particular compound patterns.

der Bindestrich; plural: die Bindestriche

hyphen

Can highlight components in an unwieldy compound; noun components following it retain capitals.

The right-hand head controls the grammar

A determinative noun compound denotes a kind of its right-hand head. That head determines gender and supplies the compound's case and plural inflection; the earlier components do not independently change to agree.

UseFormExample
GenderSchlüsselsuch- + die Zeremonie → die SchlüsselsuchzeremonieUnsere Schlüsselsuchzeremonie beginnt an der Haustür.
Pluralder Notfallkeksschrank → die NotfallkeksschränkeZwei Notfallkeksschränke wären übertrieben.
Case inflectiondes Notfallkeksschranks; in den NotfallkeksschränkenDie Tür des Notfallkeksschranks klemmt.

Context supplies the relationship

The components do not explicitly encode relationships such as 'for', 'about' or 'during'. Listeners infer them from familiar patterns and the situation. With three or more components, different internal groupings can produce different readings even when the final head stays the same.

UseFormExample
Purpose inferredKeks + Schrank → KeksschrankUnser Keksschrank ist ein Schrank für Kekse, nicht aus Keksen.
Emergency modifies biscuits[[Notfall + Keks] + Schrank]Im Notfallkeksschrank liegen die Kekse, die wir für Notfälle aufheben.
Emergency modifies biscuit cupboard[Notfall + [Keks + Schrank]]Der Notfallkeksschrank ist unser Ersatz-Keksschrank für den Fall, dass der normale leer ist.

Hyphens help readers find the parts

German compounds are normally written together. A hyphen can make an unfamiliar or long coinage easier to read and suggest a grouping. It does not define the semantic relationship, so a paraphrase may still be needed.

UseFormExample
Highlight the larger componentsBagatellentscheidungs-AufschiebeausschussDer Bagatellentscheidungs-Aufschiebeausschuss tagt morgen – vielleicht.
Suggest a readingNotfallkeks-Schrank versus Notfall-KeksschrankMit Notfallkeks-Schrank meinen wir einen Schrank für unsere Notfallkekse.

Linking elements are patterned, not freely chosen

Linking elements depend on established lexical and word-formation patterns. Some patterns are productive, but no universal rule lets you insert -s- wherever it sounds amusing. Use familiar compounds as models and check uncertain formations. A linking -s- is not automatically a genitive ending.

UseFormExample
Established -s- patternEntscheidung + s + Ausschuss → EntscheidungsausschussNach diesem Muster bilden wir scherzhaft Bagatellentscheidungs-Aufschiebeausschuss.
No extra linking elementSchlüssel + Suche → SchlüsselsucheUnsere Schlüsselsuche braucht kein zusätzliches Fugen-s.
Do not confuse a stem ending with a linkerKeks + Schrank → KeksschrankDas erste s in Keksschrank gehört zu Keks; das zweite beginnt Schrank.

More examples

Wir nennen das jetzt Sofadeckenwanderung: Jeden Abend landen alle Decken auf einem anderen Sofa.

We're calling it sofa-blanket migration now: every evening, all the blankets end up on a different sofa.

An affectionate coinage: die Sofadeckenwanderung, plural die Sofadeckenwanderungen. Wanderung is the head; the explanation establishes the intended meaning.

Die Schlüsselsuchzeremonie dauert heute nur zwei Minuten.

Today's ceremonial key search takes only two minutes.

The invented word classifies the activity as a Zeremonie, with feminine gender.

Ist der Notfall-Keksschrank für Notfälle gedacht, oder liegen darin besondere Notfallkekse?

Is the emergency biscuit cupboard intended for emergencies, or does it contain special emergency biscuits?

The hyphen suggests a grouping, but the question still needs context to settle the intended relationship.

Unser Bagatellentscheidungs-Aufschiebeausschuss hat die Keksfrage auf morgen vertagt.

Our minor-decision postponement committee has deferred the biscuit question until tomorrow.

A deliberately elaborate family coinage. Ausschuss supplies masculine gender; the hyphen makes the long word more readable.
