Before That Happened in Spanish

This guide focuses on the 'Past Perfect' (Pluscuamperfecto), which is used to describe an action that was completed before another past event took place. It is the Spanish equivalent of 'had done'.

What you'll learn

  • Express the sequence of past events clearly.
  • Master the formation of the Pluscuamperfecto using 'había' + participle.
  • Explain the 'past in the past' when telling stories to your child.

Spanish phrases for before that happened

  • Tenías hambre porque habías dejado tu lonchera en casa.

You were hungry because you had left your lunchbox at home.

Uses 'habías dejado' to show the action happened before the hunger.

  • Regresamos porque yo había olvidado tu bolsa de deporte.

'Ya' (already) is a frequent marker for this tense.

'Habías ahorrado' is the condition that allowed the purchase.

'Para cuando' (by the time) often triggers the use of the past perfect.

In Spanish, we form the past perfect using the imperfect tense of the auxiliary verb 'haber' followed by the past participle. Unlike some other languages, Spanish only uses 'haber' as the auxiliary, never 'ser' (to be).
