Spanish phrases for our lovely day

  • Tu leche estaba caliente.

    Your milk was warm.

    'Estaba' is used here because temperature is a state.

    'Fue' is the past tense of 'ser', used to describe an event.

  • El paseo fue tranquilo.

    The walk was quiet.

    'Paseo' means walk or stroll.

    'Contigo' means 'with you'.

  • Tuviste una siesta larga.

    You had a long nap.

    'Tuviste' is the past tense of 'tener' (to have) for 'you'.

    You had some milk.

    'Un poco de' means 'a little bit of' or 'some'.

    'Caliente' follows the noun 'baño'.

To say someone 'had' something in a completed sense, we use the Preterite tense of Tener.

The Verb 'Ser' vs 'Estar' in the Past

Spanish has two ways to say 'was'. Use 'fue' for qualities/events and 'estaba' for states/temperatures.
