Putting the real issue in focus in Spanish

At a C1 level, mastering the nuance of focus allows you to direct a conversation toward the core issue without raising your voice. Spanish uses 'cleft sentences' (oraciones hendidas) to highlight specific information, using the verb 'ser' combined with relative pronouns like 'lo que', 'que', or 'quien'. This structure helps distinguish the actual problem from mere distractions or side effects.

What you'll learn

  • Mastering the 'Es... lo que' structure to provide contrastive emphasis.
  • Ensuring subject-verb agreement with the verb 'ser' when the focused element is plural.
  • Articulating complex abstract concerns clearly in professional or parenting contexts.
  • Differentiating between the cause of a problem and its symptoms through syntax.
