An extra layer of the past in German

Regional storytelling sometimes adds another participle to a familiar past form: Ich habe das schon erzählt gehabt. This unit develops receptive awareness of the double perfect (Doppelperfekt): recognising its structure, interpreting it in context and choosing standard alternatives without treating regional speech as careless.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise double-perfect forms with haben or sein plus a lexical participle and gehabt or gewesen.
  • Distinguish possible anteriority or completion readings without assuming that the extra participle always adds a fixed meaning.
  • Choose Perfekt or Plusquamperfekt as a standard paraphrase according to the intended timeline.
  • Respect regional family speech while recognising differences in suitability across settings.

German phrases for an extra layer of the past

  • Das zusätzliche Verb klang ungewohnt, aber die zeitliche Abfolge war völlig klar.

That extra verb sounded unusual, but the sequence was perfectly clear.

An unfamiliar double-perfect form need not make the timeline unclear.

  • Benutzt Oma diese Form immer, wenn sie eine Geschichte von früher erzählt?

Does Granny use that form whenever she tells an old story?

Observe an individual speaker's usage rather than assuming that everyone from the same region uses the form alike.

  • Ich würde sie nicht bloß deshalb korrigieren, weil die Form im Lehrbuch nicht vorkommt.

I wouldn't correct her merely because the textbook leaves it out.

Absence from a textbook does not establish that a regional construction is careless speech.

  • In einem formellen Brief würde ich die standardsprachliche Entsprechung wählen.

In a formal letter, I'd choose the standard equivalent.

The appropriate standard equivalent may be Perfekt or Plusquamperfekt.

  • Wollte sie betonen, dass es abgeschlossen war, oder es zeitlich weiter zurückverlegen?

Was she emphasising that it was finished, or placing it further back?

Completion and anteriority are possible readings, not meanings that the construction invariably distinguishes.

  • Hören wir uns erst den ganzen Satz an, bevor wir entscheiden, was die Form hier beiträgt.

Let's hear the whole sentence before deciding what the form contributes.

The surrounding story may be needed as well as the sentence itself.

  • Ich kenne die Form von zu Hause, benutze sie selbst aber nur selten.

I recognise it from home, though I rarely use it myself.

Receptive familiarity does not require active use.

  • Regional heißt nicht automatisch, dass es für jeden Anlass passt.

Regional doesn't automatically mean suitable for every occasion.

Respect for variation is compatible with register-sensitive choices.

Key words

das Doppelperfekt

double perfect

Plural: die Doppelperfekte. Also called das doppelte Perfekt; the extra participle is gehabt or gewesen.

die Abfolge

sequence; order

Plural: die Abfolgen. Die zeitliche Abfolge is the order in which events occur.

die Entsprechung

equivalent; counterpart

Plural: die Entsprechungen. A standard equivalent should preserve the intended timeline.

die Vorzeitigkeit

anteriority; being earlier than another reference point

Usually used without a plural in this grammatical sense.

das Partizip

participle

Plural: die Partizipien. In erzählt gehabt, both erzählt and gehabt are participles.

der Anlass

occasion

Plural: die Anlässe. Useful when discussing whether a form suits a particular setting.

Recognising the extra layer

The double perfect combines a present-tense form of haben or sein with the lexical verb's past participle and an additional gehabt or gewesen. Recognise the whole cluster rather than treating the final participle as a separate event.

UseFormExample
With habenhaben + lexical Partizip II + gehabtIch habe das schon erzählt gehabt.
With seinsein + lexical Partizip II + gewesenSie ist schon nach Hause gegangen gewesen.

Interpret the timeline, not just the ending

Depending on region, speaker and context, the construction can mark an event as earlier than another past event, highlight completion or carry little clear contrast with an ordinary perfect. It is not mechanically equivalent to English 'had done'.

UseFormExample
Possible anteriorityEarlier event viewed from a later past reference pointIch habe den Tisch schon gedeckt gehabt, als die Gäste kamen.
Possible completion emphasisAn action presented as already finishedIch habe alles fertig eingepackt gehabt.
No automatic extra time stepUse the surrounding narrative to assess the contributionOma hat das schon erzählt gehabt.

Standard paraphrases and appropriate settings

Use Plusquamperfekt when the intended meaning is 'already before that past moment'; use Perfekt when an ordinary completed-past statement is intended. Double-perfect usage is unevenly distributed: it is particularly associated with southern German-speaking areas but is not confined to them or used by all speakers there. It is generally avoided in formal standard writing.

UseFormExample
Ordinary past statementDouble perfect → Perfekt where no earlier-past relation is intendedIch habe das schon erzählt gehabt. → Ich habe das schon erzählt.
Earlier than a past eventDouble perfect → PlusquamperfektIch habe den Tisch schon gedeckt gehabt, als die Gäste kamen. → Ich hatte den Tisch schon gedeckt, als die Gäste kamen.
Earlier departuresein-based double perfect → PlusquamperfektSie ist schon gegangen gewesen, als wir ankamen. → Sie war schon gegangen, als wir ankamen.

More examples

Ich habe die Geschichte schon erzählt gehabt, bevor du dazugekommen bist.

I had already told the story before you joined us.

Regional/colloquial. The explicit sequence supports the standard paraphrase: Ich hatte die Geschichte schon erzählt, bevor du dazugekommen bist.

Als wir ankamen, ist Oma schon nach Hause gegangen gewesen.

When we arrived, Granny had already gone home.

Regional/colloquial sein-based double perfect. Standard: Als wir ankamen, war Oma schon nach Hause gegangen.

Ich habe die Tasche schon fertig gepackt gehabt.

I had already finished packing the bag.

Regional/colloquial. This translation assumes a past reference point. Without one, Ich habe die Tasche schon fertig gepackt may be the appropriate standard paraphrase; fertig also makes completion explicit.

Du hast das schon erzählt. Ich höre es mir trotzdem gerne noch einmal an.

You've already told that. I'm still happy to hear it again.

Standard Perfekt is sufficient for a previous telling with no additional past reference point. Understanding a relative's double perfect does not require copying it.
