Telling your adult child about redundancy in German

Use unstressed wohl to express tentative expectations and think aloud when discussing redundancy with your adult child. It helps distinguish what you know from what you anticipate, without asking your child to solve the uncertainty.

What you'll learn

  • Use unstressed wohl for tentative inferences and reflective questions.
  • Place wohl naturally in the clause’s middle field.
  • Interpret wohl through context and intonation rather than a single English equivalent.
  • Distinguish tentative wohl from stressed WOHL expressing emphatic contradiction.
  • Share uncertainty while keeping responsibility for coping with it clearly your own.

German phrases for telling your adult child about redundancy

  • Eine neue Stelle zu finden, wird wohl länger dauern, als ich gehofft hatte.

I suppose finding another post will take longer than I'd hoped.

Unstressed wohl presents the expected delay as an assessment, not a settled fact.

  • Du fragst dich wohl, warum ich in letzter Zeit so ungewöhnlich still bin.

You're probably wondering why I've been unusually quiet.

This tentatively infers the listener’s thoughts. Gentle delivery leaves room for them to disagree.

  • Es ist wohl die Ungewissheit, die mich am meisten verunsichert.

I imagine the uncertainty is what unsettles me most.

Wohl makes this a reflective assessment of your own feelings.

  • Wie erkläre ich das wohl, ohne dass es nach einer Katastrophe klingt?

How am I going to explain this without making it sound catastrophic?

In this question, wohl signals thinking aloud rather than asking the listener to supply a solution.

  • Die Menschen werden mir wohl mehr fehlen als die Arbeit selbst.

I expect I'll miss the people more than the actual job.

Wohl marks a tentative expectation about what the loss will feel like.

  • Du brauchst wohl auch Zeit, um das erst einmal zu verarbeiten.

You probably need time to take this in as well.

Spoken warmly, this acknowledges a possible need without claiming certainty about the listener’s feelings.

  • Ein langsamerer Neustart würde mir wohl guttun.

I suppose a slower start might do me some good.

Wohl adds a reflective, tentative stance to the possible benefit.

  • Ich werde wohl auch schwierige Tage haben; aber es ist nicht deine Aufgabe, mich da durchzutragen.

I'm likely to have difficult days; that doesn't make them your responsibility.

The expectation is tentative; the boundary is not. The second clause explicitly keeps the burden off your child.

Key words

die Stelle; plural: die Stellen

post; job; position

Eine neue Stelle finden is a natural expression for finding another job.

die Ungewissheit; plural: die Ungewissheiten

uncertainty

Usually singular for the general experience of not knowing what comes next; the plural refers to separate uncertainties.

catastrophe; disaster

Nach einer Katastrophe klingen means to sound disastrous.

der Neustart; plural: die Neustarts

fresh start; restart

Suitable for a new phase of working life, not only a new job.

verarbeiten

Used here for emotionally absorbing difficult news.

jemanden durch etwas tragen

to carry someone through something

Figuratively describes substantial emotional support; here it names a burden the child is not expected to assume.

Tentative inference and deliberation

Unstressed wohl marks a speaker’s tentative assessment. In statements it often corresponds to “probably,” “I suppose” or “I expect.” In reflective questions it can suggest “I wonder.” It does not assign a fixed degree of probability.

UseFormExample
Tentative expectationStatement + unstressed wohlDas wird wohl dauern. — I suppose that will take some time.
Reflective assessmentPresent-tense statement + unstressed wohlEs ist wohl die Ungewissheit. — I imagine it is the uncertainty.
DeliberationQuestion-word question + unstressed wohlWie sage ich es wohl? — How shall I put it, I wonder?

Middle-field placement

As a modal particle, wohl sits in the middle field: after the finite verb in a main clause and before any clause-final verbal material. Unstressed pronouns commonly precede it. Its exact position varies with the clause, but it does not stand alone in the initial position as a sentence adverb.

UseFormExample
Before the final infinitiveSubject + finite verb + wohl + … + infinitiveDas wird wohl länger dauern.
After an unstressed pronounSubject + finite verb + pronoun + wohl + …Die Menschen werden mir wohl fehlen.
Inside a reflective questionQuestion word + finite verb + pronouns + wohlWie sage ich es wohl?
In a subordinate clauseSubordinator + subject + wohl + … + finite verbIch rechne damit, dass die Suche wohl länger dauert.

Context, delivery and stressed WOHL

Wohl does not automatically make an utterance gentle. An inference about someone else can sound presumptuous, and a question can sound impatient if delivered sharply. Stressed WOHL can emphatically contradict a denial; in that use it does not mean “probably.” Capitals below indicate contrastive stress, not normal spelling.

UseFormExample
Tentative, unstressedwohl without contrastive stressDu brauchst wohl Zeit. — You probably need time.
Emphatic contradictionStressed WOHL responding to a denial„Du brauchst keine Hilfe.“ — „Ich brauche WOHL Hilfe!“ — “You don’t need help.” — “I DO need help!”
Potentially confrontational questionwohl + sharp questioning intonationWas soll das wohl heißen? — What is that supposed to mean?

Meine Stelle fällt weg. Die Suche nach etwas Neuem wird wohl dauern.

My position is being eliminated. Finding something new will probably take time.

State the known fact directly; use wohl only for the uncertain expectation.

Wie finde ich wohl die richtigen Worte dafür? Ich möchte ehrlich sein, ohne dir Angst zu machen.

How can I find the right words for this, I wonder? I want to be honest without frightening you.

The wohl-question voices deliberation; it need not be a request for advice.

Ich brauche wohl etwas Zeit, um mich neu zu orientieren. Du musst das nicht für mich lösen.

I probably need some time to work out a new direction. You don’t have to solve this for me.

Tentative self-assessment is paired with an unambiguous boundary.
