A question that answers itself aloud in German

Hypophora (die Hypophora) means posing a question and immediately answering it yourself. In German essays, speeches and family storytelling, it can make a train of thought easier to follow. The answer may be a complete sentence or a compact fragment; the choice shapes emphasis and pace.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise a question and its self-supplied answer as hypophora.
  • Choose between complete and elliptical answers for different rhetorical effects.
  • Use question–answer pairs to structure paragraphs and spoken storytelling.
  • Distinguish guiding an audience through your reasoning from genuinely inviting a response.

German phrases for a question that answers itself aloud

  • Was hält mich beim Lesen bei der Stange? Der Verdacht, dass sie etwas verheimlicht.

What keeps me reading? The suspicion that she's hiding something.

The noun-phrase answer isolates the motive and leaves it ringing in the reader's mind.

  • Warum funktioniert dieser Schluss? Er weigert sich, alles fein säuberlich aufzulösen.

Why does that ending work? It refuses to tidy everything away.

A complete-sentence answer develops an interpretation rather than merely naming a quality.

  • Wer fehlt in seiner Argumentation? Jeder, der anderer Meinung sein könnte.

What's missing from his argument? Anyone who might disagree.

German naturally uses Wer here because the answer identifies people. The elliptical answer makes the criticism pointed.

  • Warum habe ich das Buch behalten? Ein Satz ließ mich nicht mehr los.

Why did I keep the book? One sentence wouldn't leave me alone.

The immediate answer turns a personal question into a miniature story.

  • Was macht die Rede überzeugend? Nicht Gewissheit, sondern intellektuelle Redlichkeit.

What makes the speech convincing? Not certainty, but intellectual honesty.

The elliptical answer gives the contrasting qualities maximum prominence.

  • Habe ich erwartet, dass es mir gefallen würde? Ehrlich gesagt habe ich erwartet, es ertragen zu müssen.

Did I expect to enjoy it? Frankly, I expected to endure it.

A yes/no question need not receive an explicit Nein: the full answer supplies a clear response through its content.

  • Welche Gefahr besteht darin, die eigenen Fragen selbst zu beantworten? Niemand sonst kommt zu Wort.

What's the danger of answering your own questions? Nobody else gets a turn.

This pair demonstrates hypophora while naming its conversational risk.

  • Warum sollte man es laut lesen? Der Rhythmus offenbart, was die Zeichensetzung verbirgt.

Why read it aloud? The rhythm reveals what the punctuation conceals.

The question directs attention to a practical choice; the complete answer immediately provides the reason.

The defining pattern: ask, then answer

Hypophora is a rhetorical arrangement, not a special sentence form. The writer or speaker poses a question and supplies the answer immediately. A question whose answer is merely implied does not display this explicit question–answer pattern.

UseFormExample
Open questionQuestion word + question? Self-supplied answer. Was bleibt? Eine unbequeme Frage.
Yes/no questionYes/no question? Self-supplied response, with or without ja or nein.Hat mich das Buch überzeugt? Nur zum Teil.

Complete versus elliptical answers

A complete answer can explain or develop the point. An elliptical answer omits material recoverable from the question and often sounds sharper. Keep the fragment grammatically compatible with what it answers; brevity should not obscure the connection.

UseFormExample
Complete answerQuestion? Complete explanatory sentence.Warum habe ich das Buch behalten? Ein Satz ließ mich nicht mehr los.
Elliptical answerQuestion? Focused phrase without a finite verb. Was macht die Rede überzeugend? Intellektuelle Redlichkeit.
Case in an elliptical answerRetain the case required by the understood answer.Wem hilft diese Erklärung? Den Eltern.

Paragraph rhythm and spoken timing

A short question can mark a turn in an argument. Answer it directly, then develop the point. Keeping both in one paragraph makes the link tight; placing the answer at the start of the next paragraph creates a stronger hinge. In speech, a brief pause highlights the answer without necessarily offering a conversational turn.

UseFormExample
Compact pairShort question? Short answer. Was fehlte? Ein Plan.
Pair followed by developmentQuestion? Answer. Supporting detail.Warum blieben wir? Der Regen war zu stark. Also erzählten wir uns Geschichten.
Paragraph hingeQuestion at paragraph end; answer opens the next paragraph. Was macht diese Geschichte besonders? Sie nimmt die Sorgen der Kinder ernst.

Guiding reasoning versus inviting a response

The same question can introduce hypophora or genuinely ask for information. The difference lies in who is expected to answer. When talking with children, answer your own questions to guide a story, but leave real space when you want their ideas. Repeated self-answering can make an apparent discussion feel closed.

UseFormExample
Guiding a storySpeaker asks and immediately answers.Warum erzähle ich euch das? Weil wir damals gelernt haben, einander zuzuhören.
Genuine invitationSpeaker asks and yields the turn; not hypophora. Was meint ihr: Warum hat sie gewartet?

More examples

Was macht die Heldin mutig? Nicht, dass sie keine Angst hat, sondern dass sie trotzdem handelt.

What makes the heroine brave? Not that she has no fear, but that she acts anyway.

An elliptical answer frames a distinction that an essay could then develop.

Warum erzähle ich euch von diesem Ausflug? Wir hatten uns verirrt und dabei unseren Lieblingsplatz entdeckt.

Why am I telling you about this outing? We had lost our way and, in doing so, discovered our favourite spot.

A full answer gives family storytelling a clear direction.

Was brauchen wir für einen gelungenen Vorleseabend? Zeit, ein gutes Buch und ein offenes Ohr.

What do we need for a successful read-aloud evening? Time, a good book and a willingness to listen.

A short question followed by a list creates a memorable spoken rhythm.
