C2 three-quarter milestone in German
This three-quarter milestone reviews C2 units 1–29: choosing German that is precise without being cold, warm without being vague, and playful without losing clarity. The emphasis is on integrating familiar resources in demanding conversations, not adding new grammar.
What you'll learn
- Use unreal comparisons, tentative wohl and self-answered questions with awareness of their interpersonal effect.
- Keep right-dislocated phrases and independent asides clear and natural.
- Recognise regional double-perfect forms and choose context-sensitive standard paraphrases.
- Preserve sound-based humour while respecting idiomatic German.
- Negotiate forms of address and leave space for another person's response.
- Combine earlier C2 resources selectively rather than making every sentence stylistically elaborate.
German phrases for c2 three-quarter milestone
Das klingt, als hättest du schon entschieden, was ich gemeint habe.
That sounds as though you've already decided what I meant.
The finite Konjunktiv II verb follows als directly. The implied comparison can sound accusatory even with calm delivery.
Er verändert die ganze Atmosphäre, dieser unerwartet förmliche Gruß.
It changes the whole atmosphere, that unexpectedly formal greeting.
Er anticipates the detached nominative phrase dieser unerwartet förmliche Gruß. A short pause gives the final phrase its clarifying, afterthought quality.
Die freundlichere Formulierung ist wohl auch die treffendere.
I suppose the kinder wording is also the more accurate one.
Unstressed wohl presents a tentative judgement. Treffender means more apt or more accurate in capturing the intended meaning.
Was würde ich beibehalten? Die Ehrlichkeit, ohne die unnötige Schärfe.
What would I keep? The honesty, without the unnecessary sting.
The speaker answers their own question: hypophora. The short answer foregrounds the distinction between honesty and hurtfulness.
Deine Randbemerkung – das meine ich liebevoll – stiehlt dem ganzen Absatz die Schau.
Your aside — I mean this affectionately — is stealing the entire paragraph.
The independent insertion signals affection; the surrounding clause remains complete without it. Die Schau stehlen naturally conveys stealing the spotlight.
Welche Formulierung wir auch immer wählen, lassen wir Raum für eine Antwort.
Whatever wording we choose, let's leave room for a reply.
Welche … auch immer covers all possible choices. The finite verb wählen closes the subordinate clause.
Kannst du das Spiel mit den Wortklängen bewahren, ohne dass der Satz unnatürlich wirkt?
Can you preserve the play on sounds without making the sentence unnatural?
The request concerns sound-based wordplay, not merely a joke with the same topic. A natural German solution may need different words.
Könnten wir diese regionale Vergangenheitsform standardsprachlich wiedergeben, ohne der Stimme der sprechenden Person ihre Eigenart zu nehmen?
Could we render that regional past form neutrally without flattening the speaker's voice?
Standardsprachlich identifies the target variety without presenting regional speech as defective. The appropriate past tense depends on context.

die Formulierung; plural: die Formulierungen
wording; formulation
Useful when discussing how something is expressed rather than disputing its underlying content.
der Gruß; plural: die Grüße
greeting
Ein förmlicher Gruß can communicate respect or unexpected distance.
die Randbemerkung; plural: die Randbemerkungen

Can refer to a spoken aside as well as a comment in writing.
der Absatz; plural: die Absätze

Here it refers to a section of text.
der Wortklang; plural: die Wortklänge
sound of a word
Relevant to paronomasia, where similar or identical sounds connect different meanings.
die Vergangenheitsform; plural: die Vergangenheitsformen
past-tense form
A neutral descriptive term for discussing standard and regional usage.
die Eigenart; plural: die Eigenarten
distinctive character; individual characteristic
In the final phrase, it means the individuality of a speaker's voice, not an undesirable quirk.
das Du; plural: die Dus
informal form of address
Usually singular in das Du anbieten: to offer to use informal address.
Unreal comparisons after als
Review the pattern als + finite Konjunktiv II verb, rather than the clause-final order used with als ob. An implied comparison may challenge someone's assumptions; grammatical tentativeness does not automatically make it gentle.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb immediately after als | als + finite Konjunktiv II verb + subject + remainder | Das klingt, als hättest du schon entschieden, was ich gemeint habe. |
Right dislocation
An anticipatory pronoun is clarified by a detached, case-matched noun phrase. Keep the afterthought pause audible. Unlike left dislocation, this places the clarification after the clause rather than establishing the topic first.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative clarification | er …, dieser … Gruß | Er verändert die ganze Atmosphäre, dieser unerwartet förmliche Gruß. |
| Accusative clarification | ihn …, den … | Ich würde ihn beibehalten, den freundlichen Ton. |
Tentative wohl
Unstressed wohl in the middle field can mark a tentative inference or deliberation. It has no single fixed English equivalent. Stressed WOHL expressing contradiction is a different use.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tentative judgement | subject + finite verb + wohl + remainder | Die freundlichere Formulierung ist wohl auch die treffendere. |
| Deliberation | question with unstressed wohl | Wie sage ich es wohl am freundlichsten? |
Hypophora
Ask a question and immediately answer it yourself to guide attention. The answer may be a complete sentence or a fragment. In a conversation, make clear when a question genuinely invites the other person's answer instead.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Question and elliptical answer | self-posed question + own answer | Was würde ich beibehalten? Die Ehrlichkeit, ohne die unnötige Schärfe. |
Independent parenthetical asides
Paired dashes or brackets separate a syntactically independent insertion. Removing it should leave the host clause intact. Here the aside comments on the speaker's attitude; it does not replace earlier wording as a self-correction would.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Independent insertion | host clause opening – independent aside – host clause continuation | Deine Randbemerkung – das meine ich liebevoll – stiehlt dem ganzen Absatz die Schau. |
Unconditional question-word constructions
A question word with auch immer ranges over unknown possibilities: the main statement applies regardless of which possibility holds. These are not information-seeking questions; the subordinate clause has a final finite verb.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Any choice of wording | welche + noun + subject + auch immer + final verb | Welche Formulierung wir auch immer wählen, lassen wir Raum für eine Antwort. |
| Any outcome | was auch immer + final verb | Was auch immer passiert, wir hören dir zu. |
Paronomasia
Review wordplay based on similar or identical sounds. Check both the competing meanings and whether the sentence sounds natural aloud. Unlike zeugma or idiom modification, the link is primarily acoustic; literal translation may lose it.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Homophones | Saite / Seite | Beim Gitarrenunterricht zeigt Papa eine neue Seite – und eine neue Saite. |
Receptive double-perfect awareness
Recognise haben or sein with a lexical participle and gehabt or gewesen in some regional and colloquial varieties. Functions vary, including anteriority and completion. Choose standard Perfekt or Plusquamperfekt from the timeline, not by mechanically replacing the form.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Regional or colloquial input | haben + lexical participle + gehabt | Ich habe das schon erzählt gehabt. |
| Neutral report of a completed telling | Perfekt, if no earlier-past relation needs marking | Ich habe das schon erzählt. |
| Telling before another past event | Plusquamperfekt, if the context establishes anteriority | Ich hatte das schon erzählt, als die Frage erneut aufkam. |
Negotiating address
Review duzen, siezen and das Du anbieten as choices about the relationship, not automatic indicators of kindness or distance. Preferences vary by setting, generation and region. Agree on a form of address rather than assuming that everyone welcomes the same degree of familiarity.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Offer reciprocal informal address | offer with room to decline | Möchten Sie, dass wir uns duzen, oder bleiben wir lieber beim Sie? |
| Respect a preference | acknowledge the requested register | Natürlich, dann bleiben wir beim Sie. |
Earlier resources: register-sensitive selection
Draw on units 1–19 only where they help: a genuine self-repair can improve precision, metalinguistic negation can reject a hurtful label, and restrictive ellipsis can limit a commitment. Avoid stacking devices merely to sound advanced.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Accountable self-repair | genauer gesagt | Das war unklar – genauer gesagt: Ich habe meine Bitte nicht deutlich ausgesprochen. |
| Reject a label | metalinguistic negation + replacement | Das war nicht „frech“ – du hast widersprochen. |
| Limit a commitment | wenn überhaupt | Den Scherz würde ich, wenn überhaupt, nur im vertrauten Kreis verwenden. |

Das klingt, als wäre die Sache schon entschieden. Welche Worte wir auch immer wählen, lassen wir Raum für deine Antwort.
That sounds as though the matter is already decided. Whatever words we choose, let's leave room for your reply.
The free-choice construction follows a potentially challenging comparison with an explicit invitation to respond.
Was hilft jetzt? Eine klare Bitte. Die ist wohl hilfreicher, die freundliche Formulierung.
What helps now? A clear request. It is probably more helpful, the friendly wording.
Hypophora, tentative wohl and right dislocation work together in a conversational register.
Dein Wortspiel – ich musste wirklich lachen – passt hier gut. Beim Gitarrenunterricht zeigt Papa schließlich eine neue Seite und eine neue Saite.
Your wordplay — it really made me laugh — works well here. After all, during guitar lessons Dad shows a new side of himself and a new string.
The aside is independent. Seite and Saite sound identical; the English rendering explains the meanings but does not reproduce the pun.
Möchten Sie, dass wir uns duzen? Wir können genauso gut beim Sie bleiben.
Would you like us to use informal address? We can just as easily keep using formal address.
This is a genuine question, not hypophora: the second sentence leaves the choice open rather than answering for the listener.
Die regionale Form würde ich hier standardsprachlich wiedergeben. Was würde ich beibehalten? Den Rhythmus und die Wortwahl.
I would render the regional form in standard German here. What would I keep? The rhythm and the choice of words.
A neutral grammatical paraphrase need not erase every feature of the speaker's individual voice.
