Turning a thought back on itself in German
Chiasmus turns a thought back on itself by arranging corresponding elements or ideas in an ABBA pattern. In German, this can make a family observation affectionate, witty or memorable. The key is a genuine crossing—not simply repeated words—and a balanced formulation is not necessarily a sound argument.
What you'll learn
- Recognise crossed constituents and reversed relationships in German sayings.
- Distinguish an ABBA pattern from repetition or a merely balanced contrast.
- Use a gentle reversal to express affection or shared humour.
- Separate the appeal of symmetrical wording from the truth of its conclusion.
German phrases for turning a thought back on itself
Früher planten wir unsere Abenteuer; heute planen unsere Abenteuer uns.
We used to plan our adventures; now our adventures plan us.
The relationship reverses: we → adventures / adventures → us. Giving adventures the power to plan is deliberately playful.
Du hast mir Geduld beigebracht; Ungeduld habe offenbar ich dir beigebracht.
You taught me patience; impatience, I apparently taught you.
A loose conceptual crossing: you as teacher → patience / impatience → me as teacher. The contrasting qualities and exchanged teaching roles make this affectionate self-mockery rather than exact verbal symmetry.
Ich liefere die Fragen; für die fragwürdigen Antworten bist du zuständig.
I bring the questions; the questionable answers are your department.
The broader arrangement crosses speaker → contribution / contribution → addressee. The link between Fragen and fragwürdig adds wit, but that word echo alone would not establish chiasmus. Best delivered warmly.
Früher folgtest du meiner Führung; deiner Führung folge heute ich.
Once you followed my lead; your lead is what I follow now.
Subject → complement becomes complement → subject, while the guiding and following roles reverse. The wording is deliberately polished rather than everyday casual speech.
Wir prägen unsere Gewohnheiten, dann prägen unsere Gewohnheiten uns.
We shape our habits, then our habits shape us.
We → habits / habits → us: a clear semantic crossing, although both clauses retain subject–verb–object order.
Das klingt wunderbar ausgewogen, aber stimmt es auch wirklich?
That sounds wonderfully balanced, but is it actually true?
A response to rhetorical symmetry, not itself a chiasmus: pleasing balance does not establish truth.
Du hast meinen eigenen Satz ziemlich elegant gegen mich gewendet.
You've turned my own sentence against me rather elegantly.
Acknowledges an elegant verbal reversal. Whether the preceding remark is a chiasmus depends on its actual structure.
Wollen wir die griffige Formulierung beibehalten und die Schlussfolgerung hinterfragen?
Shall we keep the neat wording and question the conclusion?
Separates appreciation of the wording from acceptance of the argument.

Recognising the ABBA crossing
Choose two corresponding elements or ideas and trace their order across the two parts. Chiasmus places them in reverse order. The correspondence may be grammatical or conceptual; the words need not be identical. Always state what is crossing rather than treating any balanced sentence as a chiasmus.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Syntactic crossing | A: subject → B: complement / B: complement → A: subject | Früher sorgtest du für mich; für dich sorge jetzt ich. |
| Semantic crossing | A: people → B: habits / B: habits → A: people | Wir prägen unsere Gewohnheiten, dann prägen unsere Gewohnheiten uns. |
| Crossed roles with related ideas | A: teacher → B: quality / B: contrasting quality → A: new teacher | Du hast mir Geduld beigebracht; Ungeduld habe offenbar ich dir beigebracht. |
Crossing is not mere repetition
Repeated words can help make a crossing audible, but repetition alone is insufficient. In a semantic crossing, the participants exchange roles even if the grammatical order stays the same. Conversely, a contrast can sound balanced while keeping the same arrangement throughout.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Repetition without crossing | A → B / A → B | Wir planen unsere Abenteuer; wir planen unsere Ferien. |
| Reversed relationship | A acts on B / B acts on A | Früher planten wir unsere Abenteuer; heute planen unsere Abenteuer uns. |
| Balanced contrast without crossing | Same constituent order in both parts | Ich stelle die Fragen; du gibst die Antworten. |
Enjoy the symmetry; test the claim
A pause between the two halves and emphasis on the exchanged elements make the reversal easy to hear. In family conversation, use it as shared play rather than a verbal trap. In argument, check each half separately: reversing a relationship does not prove that both directions hold equally, always or for the same reasons.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affectionate reversal | Past relationship / reversed present relationship | Früher folgtest du meiner Führung; deiner Führung folge heute ich. |
| Check truth independently | Attractive balance ≠ evidence | Das klingt wunderbar ausgewogen, aber stimmt es auch wirklich? |
| Keep the style, examine the reasoning | Appreciation of wording + scrutiny of conclusion | Wollen wir die griffige Formulierung beibehalten und die Schlussfolgerung hinterfragen? |
