German phrases for hello new day

  • Guten Morgen! Wie geht es dir?

    Good morning! How are you?

    Use this friendly greeting in the morning. Wie geht’s? is a common shorter question.

  • Hallo! Das Frühstück ist fertig.

    Hello! Breakfast is ready.

    Use ist fertig to say that a meal is ready.

  • Ich esse mit dir Frühstück.

    I eat breakfast with you.

    Mit dir means “with you” when speaking to one familiar person.

  • Du fängst um acht mit der Schule an.

    You start school at eight.

    Anfangen means “to start.” With du, it becomes fängst … an. Um acht means “at eight o’clock.”

  • Dein Freund geht mit dir.

    Your friend walks with you.

    Geht means “goes” or “walks.” For a female friend, use deine Freundin.

  • Ich arbeite heute zu Hause.

    I work at home today.

    Heute means “today.” Zu Hause means “at home.”

  • Wir spielen nach dem Abendessen Karten.

    We play cards after dinner.

    Karten spielen means “to play cards.” Nach dem Abendessen means “after dinner.”

  • Gute Nacht! Schlaf gut.

    Good night! Sleep well.

    Say this at bedtime. Schlaf gut is a friendly wish to one familiar person.

Karten is plural. No article is needed in this expression.

Simple present

German present-tense verbs change with the subject. Use the present for routines and for plans when the time is clear.

A verb that splits: anfangen

Anfangen means “to start.” In a simple statement, an goes at the end. With du, the vowel also changes from a to ä.

Du, dir and dein

Use du when “you” is the subject. After mit, use dir. Dein and deine mean “your”; their form depends on the noun.

Useful time expressions

Use um with clock times. Heute needs no preposition. Nach means “after” and takes the dative case, so das Abendessen becomes dem Abendessen.
