Count Project Supplies in German

Du hast ein Notizbuch.
You have one notebook.
Use ein before the neuter noun Notizbuch, rather than the counting word eins.
Wir brauchen zwei Bleistifte.
We need two pencils.
The plural of Bleistift is Bleistifte.
Du hast drei Kugelschreiber und vier Bücher.
You have three pens and four books.
Kugelschreiber stays the same in the plural. Buch becomes Bücher.
Wir brauchen fünf Fotos.
We need five photos.
Foto adds -s in the plural.
Hier sind sechs Karten.
Here are six cards.
Use hier sind when showing more than one item.
Du hast sieben Aufkleber.
You have seven stickers.
Aufkleber stays the same in the plural.
Hier sind acht Sterne und neun Kreise.
Here are eight stars and nine circles.
Stern and Kreis both add -e in the plural.
Wir brauchen zehn Blätter Papier.
We need ten sheets of paper.
Blätter is the plural of Blatt. No separate word for 'of' is needed before Papier.

Numbers and nouns
Count aloud with eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn. Before a noun, eins changes to a form of ein. With numbers from two upwards, use a plural noun.

Common plural patterns
German has several plural patterns. Learn each noun together with its plural. All German nouns begin with a capital letter.

Use du hast to say what one child has, wir brauchen to say what you need together, and hier sind to show several items.
