Explain how with indem

An indem clause explains how the action in the main clause is achieved. English often uses “by” plus an -ing form; German uses indem followed by a subject and a finite verb. Separate the clauses with a comma.

UseFormExample
Result or goalDu kannst + object + infinitiveDu kannst die Geschichte besser verstehen.
Methodindem + subject + other information + finite verbindem du dir die Bilder anschaust
Complete sentenceMain clause, indem clause.Du kannst die Geschichte besser verstehen, indem du dir die Bilder anschaust.

Keep the two verb patterns separate

In these main clauses, kannst is the finite verb in second position, and the infinitive comes at the end. In the indem clause, the verb is conjugated to match du and comes last.

UseFormExample
Modal verb in the main clausedu kannst … verstehenDu kannst die Geschichte besser verstehen.
Conjugated verb after indemindem du … liestDu kannst dir neue Wörter merken, indem du sie laut liest.
Separable verb after indemindem du … zurücklegstDu kannst für einen Fußball sparen, indem du Geld zurücklegst.

You can also begin with indem

If the indem clause comes first, it fills the first position of the sentence. The main clause then begins with its finite verb: kannst du, not du kannst.
