German phrases for imagine your choices
Was würdest du mit zehn Euro kaufen?
What would you buy with ten euros?
For a question with was, put würdest directly after the question word and kaufen at the end.
Ich würde die Hälfte meines Taschengeldes sparen.
I would save half of my pocket money.
Die Hälfte meines Taschengeldes means 'half of my pocket money'; meines Taschengeldes is genitive.
Würdest du dir einen Comic oder einen neuen Ball aussuchen?
Would you choose a comic or a new ball?
Dir adds the idea of choosing something for yourself. The infinitive aussuchen stays together at the end.
Wenn du vier Wochen lang sparen würdest, hättest du genug Geld für das Spiel.
If you saved for four weeks, you would have enough for that game.
In the wenn clause, würdest comes last. Hättest means 'would have' and is more natural here than haben würdest.
Wenn wir eine günstigere Brotdose kaufen würden, hätten wir noch Geld für ein Buch übrig.
If we bought a cheaper lunchbox, we would have money left for a book.
Geld übrig haben means 'to have money left'. Hätten wir begins the result after the initial wenn clause.
Wenn dein Freund am Samstag zu Besuch kommen würde, würden wir zusammen etwas backen.
If your friend visited on Saturday, we would bake something together.
Both clauses use würde plus an infinitive, but the verb order differs. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.
Ich würde die Münzen in ein Glas legen, damit sie nicht verloren gehen.
I would put the coins in a jar so they would not get lost.
Damit introduces a purpose. German naturally uses the present tense here, even though English uses 'would not'.
Wenn du heute dein ganzes Geld ausgeben würdest, würdest du länger auf die Rollschuhe warten.
If you spent all your money today, you would wait longer for those skates.
Auf etwas warten means 'to wait for something'. Rollschuhe means roller skates; for ice skates, use Schlittschuhe.

Imagined actions: würde plus infinitive
Use a form of würde with the infinitive to describe an imagined choice or action, rather than a definite plan. In a statement, würde is in second position and the infinitive goes at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Forms of würde | ich würde; du würdest; er/sie/es würde; wir würden; ihr würdet; sie/Sie würden | Wir würden zusammen etwas backen. |
| Statement | subject + würde form + other information + infinitive | Ich würde mein Taschengeld sparen. |
Asking about imagined choices
In a yes/no question, start with würde. With a question word such as was, put würde immediately after it. Keep the infinitive at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Question with was | Was + würdest + du + other information + infinitive? | Was würdest du mit zehn Euro kaufen? |
| Yes/no or choice question | Würdest + du + other information + infinitive? | Würdest du einen Comic oder einen Ball kaufen? |
Hypothetical wenn clauses
Wenn means 'if' here. In a hypothetical wenn clause, the infinitive comes before the final würde form. When this clause comes first, begin the result with its conjugated verb, followed by the subject. Separate the clauses with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Imagined condition | Wenn + subject + other information + infinitive + würde form | Wenn du heute dein ganzes Geld ausgeben würdest, würdest du länger warten. |
| Imagined result | Wenn clause, + würde form + subject + other information + infinitive | Wenn dein Freund kommen würde, würden wir etwas backen. |
Use hätte for 'would have'
For imagined possession, German normally uses hätte rather than würde haben. The form changes with the subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With du | du hättest | Du hättest genug Geld für das Spiel. |
| With wir after a condition | Wenn clause, + hätten wir + other information | Wenn wir weniger ausgeben würden, hätten wir noch Geld übrig. |
Purpose with damit
Damit means 'so that' and explains the purpose of an action. Its conjugated verb goes at the end. A present-tense purpose clause is natural even after an imagined action with würde.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose clause | imagined action, + damit + subject + other information + conjugated verb | Ich würde die Münzen in ein Glas legen, damit sie nicht verloren gehen. |
