ausgeben
to spend
A separable verb: du gibst Geld aus. With würde, the infinitive stays together: du würdest Geld ausgeben.
Imagined choices: würde + infinitive
Use a form of würde with an infinitive to describe an imagined action or outcome. In a statement, würde is the second sentence element and the infinitive normally comes last.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I would | ich würde + infinitive | Ich würde ein ruhigeres Spiel wählen. |
| You would | du würdest + infinitive | Du würdest weniger Geld ausgeben. |
| We would | wir würden + infinitive | Wir würden die Party zusammen planen. |
Hypothetical conditions with wenn
Wenn means “if” in these sentences. In a wenn clause using würde, put the infinitive before the form of würde at the end. Separate the clause from the main clause with a comma. Unlike English, German allows this “would” construction in hypothetical if-clauses.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Condition second | Main clause, wenn + subject + ... + infinitive + würde. | Ich würde dir helfen, wenn du eine Party planen würdest. |
| Condition first | Wenn + subject + ... + infinitive + würde, würde + subject + ... + infinitive. | Wenn du sparen würdest, würdest du weniger ausgeben. |
Questions and a common short form
For yes/no questions, start with würde. With a question word such as was, place würde immediately after it. Some verbs commonly use a one-word Konjunktiv II form: hättest means “would have”.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Yes/no question | Würdest du + ... + infinitive? | Würdest du bei der Theater-AG mitmachen? |
| Question with was | Was würdest du + infinitive? | Was würdest du kaufen? |
| Would have | du hättest | Du hättest mehr Platz. |
