Dreaming Up Baby Days in German

Imagine a gentle day with your baby using würde + infinitive. These phrases describe possible choices and outcomes, rather than fixed plans. Use du when speaking to your child.

What you'll learn

  • Describe imagined routines with würde + infinitive.
  • Match würde to the subject: ich würde, du würdest, wir würden.
  • Build hypothetical wenn clauses and describe what would happen next.
  • Use everyday vocabulary for walks, visits and playtime.

German phrases for dreaming up baby days

  • Ich würde für unseren Spaziergang mit dem Kinderwagen den ruhigeren Weg wählen.

I would choose the quieter path for our pram walk.

Würde goes in the second position; the infinitive wählen goes at the end. Ruhigeren means ‘quieter’ here.

  • Wir würden bei einem längeren Besuch deine Lieblingsdecke mitnehmen.

We would take your favourite blanket on a longer visit.

With wir, use würden. The separable verb mitnehmen stays together as an infinitive.

  • Deine Oma würde das Schlaflied noch einmal singen.

Your grandmother would sing that lullaby again.

Oma is the warm, everyday word for ‘grandmother’. Noch einmal means ‘again’ or ‘once more’.

  • Ich würde dein weiches Bilderbuch neben die Spielmatte legen.

I would put your soft picture book beside the play mat.

Legen means to put something down flat. Neben takes the accusative here because it describes where you would put the book.

  • Wenn du früh aufwachen würdest, würden wir zusammen aus dem Fenster schauen.

If you were to wake early, we would look out of the window together.

In the wenn clause, würdest comes last. After this opening clause, the main clause begins with würden wir.

  • Wenn wir Opa besuchen würden, würde er dir seinen Garten zeigen.

If we were to visit Grandpa, he would show you his garden.

Dir means ‘to you’. The pattern is jemandem etwas zeigen: to show someone something.

  • Wenn du nach dem Löffel greifen würdest, würde ich dir helfen, ihn zu halten.

If you were to reach for the spoon, I would help you hold it.

Nach etwas greifen means ‘to reach for something’ and takes the dative. Ihn refers back to the masculine noun Löffel.

  • Wenn du heute zu krabbeln anfangen würdest, würde ich den Korb aus dem Weg räumen.

If you were to start crawling today, I would move the basket out of your way.

Anfangen, etwas zu tun means ‘to start doing something’. Aus dem Weg räumen means ‘to move out of the way’.

Imagined choices: würde + infinitive

Use a form of würde plus an infinitive to say what someone would do. In a simple statement, würde is in the second position and the infinitive is at the end. This presents an imagined action, not a fixed future plan.

UseFormExample
I wouldich würde + infinitiveIch würde den ruhigeren Weg wählen.
You woulddu würdest + infinitiveDu würdest nach dem Löffel greifen.
He or she woulder/sie würde + infinitiveOma würde ein Schlaflied singen.
We wouldwir würden + infinitiveWir würden deine Lieblingsdecke mitnehmen.

Hypothetical wenn clauses

Wenn means ‘if’ in these imagined situations. Put the infinitive before the form of würde at the end of the wenn clause. Separate the clauses with a comma. If the wenn clause comes first, the main clause starts with its conjugated verb, followed by the subject.

UseFormExample
Imagined conditionwenn + subject + other words + infinitive + würde formWenn du früh aufwachen würdest, …
Result after an opening wenn clausewürde form + subject + other words + infinitive… würden wir zusammen aus dem Fenster schauen.
Complete sentenceWenn … würden, würde …Wenn wir Opa besuchen würden, würde er dir seinen Garten zeigen.

Infinitives with and without zu

The infinitive directly linked to würde never takes zu. Other verbs in the sentence may introduce their own zu-infinitive phrase, as anfangen does here.

UseFormExample

A separate zu-infinitive phrasehelfen, etwas zu tunIch würde dir helfen, den Löffel zu halten.
