Slowing Down With Baby in German
Practise talking about calmer moments with your baby. Use statt ... zu to describe replacing one action with another when the same person or people perform both actions.
What you'll learn
- Describe gentle changes to everyday routines.
- Use statt ... zu when both actions share a subject.
- Place infinitive clauses before or after the main clause.
- Use zu correctly with separable verbs.
German phrases for slowing down with baby
Statt hastig durch deinen Feed zu scrollen, mache ich eine kurze Pause.
Instead of rushing through your feed, I take a short break.
Deinen means 'your'; ich is the subject of both actions. Eine Pause machen means 'to take a break'.
Statt das helle Licht einzuschalten, benutze ich die gedämpfte Lampe.
Instead of switching on the bright light, I use the dim lamp.
Einschalten is separable: ein + zu + schalten becomes einzuschalten. Gedämpft describes soft, subdued light.
Wir sitzen zusammen auf dem Boden, statt auf dem Sofa zu bleiben.
We sit together on the floor instead of staying on the sofa.
The statt clause follows the main clause. Both actions have wir as their understood subject.
Statt noch ein Spielzeug zu kaufen, tausche ich die Spielsachen in deinem Korb aus.
Instead of buying another toy, I rotate the toys in your basket.
Die Spielsachen austauschen means swapping the available toys for others, rather than physically turning them.
Während du zur Ruhe kommst, singe ich leise, statt laut zu sprechen.
I sing softly instead of talking loudly while you settle.
Zur Ruhe kommen means 'to settle down'. Ich performs both singing and speaking; du is the subject of the separate während clause.
Statt dich zum Spielzeug zu ziehen, rollst du dich auf den Bauch.
Instead of pulling yourself towards the toy, you roll onto your tummy.
Dich means 'yourself' here. Both actions refer to du, the baby being addressed.
Wir nehmen den ruhigen Weg, statt an der stark befahrenen Straße entlangzugehen.
We take the quiet path instead of walking beside the busy road.
Stark befahren describes a road with heavy traffic. Entlanggehen becomes entlangzugehen with zu.
Statt auf mein Handy zu schauen, beobachte ich, wie du krabbeln übst.
Instead of checking my phone, I watch you practise crawling.
Ich performs both checking and watching. The separate wie clause describes what the baby is practising.

Replacing an action with statt ... zu
Use statt ... zu for 'instead of doing something'. The statt clause names the action being replaced; the main clause names the chosen action. Both actions must share a subject, which is not repeated in the infinitive clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | Main clause, statt + additional words + zu + infinitive. | Ich singe, statt laut zu sprechen. |
| Shared subject | wir + chosen action, statt ... zu + alternative action | Wir sitzen auf dem Boden, statt auf dem Sofa zu bleiben. |
| Different subjects | statt dass + subject + ... + finite verb | Statt dass ich singe, singst du. |
Clause position and commas
A statt ... zu clause can come first or last. Separate it from the main clause with a comma. When it comes first, the main clause begins with the finite verb, followed by the subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Infinitive clause first | Statt ... zu + infinitive, finite verb + subject + ... | Statt zu scrollen, mache ich eine Pause. |
| Infinitive clause last | Subject + finite verb + ..., statt ... zu + infinitive. | Ich mache eine Pause, statt zu scrollen. |
Verb forms and reflexive pronouns
With ordinary verbs, put zu before the infinitive. With separable verbs, insert zu between the prefix and the verb and write the result as one word. Keep any reflexive pronoun and make it match the shared subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary verb | kaufen → zu kaufen | Statt ein Spielzeug zu kaufen, singe ich. |
| Separable verb | einschalten → einzuschalten | Statt das Licht einzuschalten, benutze ich die kleine Lampe. |
| Reflexive pronoun | du → dich | Statt dich zum Spielzeug zu ziehen, rollst du dich auf den Bauch. |
