German phrases for b1 three-quarter milestone

  • Ich sorge dafür, dass du dich wohlfühlst, indem ich deine Hand halte, während du gewogen wirst.

I keep you comfortable by holding your hand while you are being weighed.

Indem explains how you help your baby feel comfortable. Gewogen wirst is present passive: someone is weighing the baby.

  • Die Großmutter, der wir helfen, bereitet warmen Brei für dich zu.

The grandmother whom we are helping is preparing warm porridge for you.

Helfen takes the dative, so the relative pronoun is der. Warmen has a strong masculine accusative ending because there is no article.

  • Wenn du vor dem Mittagessen aufwachen würdest, würden wir einen kurzen Spaziergang mit dem Kinderwagen machen.

If you were to wake before lunch, we would take a short pram walk.

Würde plus an infinitive describes an imagined situation. In the wenn clause, the infinitive comes before würdest at the end.

  • Seitdem du angefangen hast zu krabbeln, hast du Freude an den Spielsachen, die auf deiner Spielmatte liegen.

Since you started crawling, you have enjoyed the toys that lie on your play mat.

German uses the present tense in hast du Freude because the enjoyment continues now. Die refers back to the plural Spielsachen.

  • Entweder werde ich dein Fläschchen zubereiten oder Papa wird es zubereiten.

Either I will prepare your bottle, or Dad will prepare it.

Entweder ... oder presents two alternatives. Both parts use Futur I: werden plus an infinitive.

  • Statt den Korb auf die Spielmatte zu stellen, stelle ich ihn neben den Schrank.

Instead of putting the basket on the play mat, I put it beside the cupboard.

Statt ... zu describes the action you do not take. Both locations take the accusative because they describe where the basket is being placed.

  • Als du ein Neugeborenes warst, wohnten wir in der Nähe von Oma und warteten jeden Sonntag auf ihre Besuche.

When you were a newborn, we lived near Grandma and waited for her visits every Sunday.

Als introduces a particular period in the past. Wohnten and warteten are regular Präteritum forms; warst is an irregular form reviewed here.

  • Wenn du müde wirst, sitzen wir im Sessel, weil du gern in Ruhe kuschelst.

When you get tired, we sit in the armchair because you enjoy a quiet cuddle.

Wenn describes a repeated situation. Gern in Ruhe kuscheln naturally expresses enjoying a quiet cuddle. Im Sessel describes a location.

Review: subordinate clauses with indem, während, dass and weil

These conjunctions introduce subordinate clauses, where the conjugated verb goes at the end. Indem explains the method, während links simultaneous events, dass introduces a statement, and weil gives a reason.

UseFormExample
Methodindem + subject + ... + conjugated verbIch beruhige dich, indem ich deine Hand halte.
Simultaneous eventwährend + subject + ... + conjugated verbIch halte deine Hand, während du gewogen wirst.
Statementdass + subject + ... + conjugated verbIch sorge dafür, dass du dich wohlfühlst.
Reasonweil + subject + ... + conjugated verbWir sitzen im Sessel, weil du gern in Ruhe kuschelst.

Review: relative clauses and the dative

A relative pronoun matches the gender and number of the noun it refers to. Its case depends on its role inside the relative clause. Relative clauses are separated by commas and have the conjugated verb at the end.

UseFormExample
Feminine singular dativedie Großmutter → der; jemandem helfenDie Großmutter, der wir helfen, bereitet Brei zu.
Plural nominativedie Spielsachen → die as the subjectDu magst die Spielsachen, die auf deiner Spielmatte liegen.

Review: würde hypotheticals and Futur I

Würde plus an infinitive describes an imagined action. Werden plus an infinitive forms Futur I. If a wenn clause comes first, the main clause begins with its conjugated verb.

UseFormExample
Imagined conditionwenn + subject + ... + infinitive + würdeWenn du vor dem Mittagessen aufwachen würdest, würden wir spazieren gehen.
Imagined resultsubject + würde + ... + infinitiveWir würden einen kurzen Spaziergang machen.
Future plansubject + werden + ... + infinitiveIch werde dein Fläschchen zubereiten.

Review: strong singular adjective endings

Without an article or another determiner, an adjective takes strong endings to show gender and case. In warmen Brei, Brei is masculine and is the accusative object of zubereiten.

UseFormExample
Masculine nominativeadjective + -erWarmer Brei steht auf dem Tisch.
Masculine accusativeadjective + -enOma bereitet warmen Brei zu.
Feminine accusativeadjective + -eWir genießen frische Luft.
Neuter accusativeadjective + -esIch hole frisches Wasser.

Review: seitdem, wenn and als

Seitdem links a starting point to what follows; use the present tense for a state that still continues. Wenn describes repeated situations or conditions. Als describes a single event or a particular period in the past.

UseFormExample
Continuing from a starting pointseitdem + subordinate clause, main clauseSeitdem du krabbelst, hast du Freude an den Spielsachen.
Repeated situationwenn + subordinate clause, main clauseWenn du müde wirst, sitzen wir im Sessel.
Particular past periodals + subordinate clause, main clauseAls du ein Neugeborenes warst, wohnten wir in der Nähe von Oma.

Review: entweder ... oder and statt ... zu

Entweder ... oder links alternatives. Statt ... zu names an action that is replaced by another action. In the source phrase, the understood subject of the infinitive is also the subject of the main clause: ich.

UseFormExample
Two alternativesentweder + first alternative + oder + second alternativeEntweder werde ich dein Fläschchen zubereiten oder Papa wird es zubereiten.
An action not takenstatt + ... + zu + infinitiveStatt den Korb auf die Spielmatte zu stellen, stelle ich ihn neben den Schrank.

Review: regular Präteritum

Regular verbs form the Präteritum with the stem plus -te- and a personal ending. Stems ending in -t or -d usually add an extra e before -te-.

UseFormExample
wohnenwohn- + -te + -n → wir wohntenWir wohnten in der Nähe von Oma.
wartenwart- + -ete + -n → wir wartetenWir warteten jeden Sonntag auf ihre Besuche.

Review: present passive

The present passive uses werden plus a past participle. It focuses on what happens to someone or something rather than on who performs the action. Compare this with Futur I, which uses an infinitive.

UseFormExample
Passive main clausesubject + werden + ... + past participleDu wirst gewogen.
Passive subordinate clauseconjunction + subject + ... + past participle + werdenIch bleibe bei dir, während du gewogen wirst.

Review: two-way prepositions

With two-way prepositions such as auf, neben and in, use the accusative for a destination and the dative for a location. Movement alone does not determine the case.

UseFormExample
Destination: ontoauf + accusativeIch stelle den Korb auf die Spielmatte.
Destination: besideneben + accusativeIch stelle den Korb neben den Schrank.
Location: onauf + dativeDie Spielsachen liegen auf deiner Spielmatte.
Location: inin + dative; in dem → imWir sitzen im Sessel.

Here stellte makes the action explicitly past. It reviews regular Präteritum together with statt ... zu and accusative destinations.
