Review: explaining how and since when
Indem introduces the method; seitdem introduces the starting point of a continuing situation or development. Both place the finite verb last. After an opening subordinate clause, the main-clause verb comes before its subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Method | indem + subject + ... + finite verb | Wir machen die Aufnahme klarer, indem wir die Tür schließen. |
| Progress since a starting point | Seitdem ... finite verb, finite verb + subject ... | Seitdem wir angefangen haben, haben wir mehrere neue Wörter gelernt. |
Review: dative relative clauses
Choose the relative pronoun according to its role inside the relative clause. With helfen, use dative dem for masculine or neuter, der for feminine and denen for plural. The finite verb comes last.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | der Schüler, dem ... | Der Schüler, dem ich geholfen habe, wird die nächste Frage stellen. |
| Feminine | die Schülerin, der ... | Die Schülerin, der ich geholfen habe, stellt eine Frage. |
| Plural | die Schüler, denen ... | Die Schüler, denen ich geholfen habe, machen die Aufnahme. |
Review: imagined choices and alternatives
Use würde plus an infinitive for an imagined action. Entweder ... oder links alternatives. Statt ... zu describes an alternative action not taken, with the same understood subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Imagined choice | subject + würde + ... + infinitive | Ich würde dickes Papier verwenden. |
| Hypothetical condition | Wenn ... infinitive + würde, würde + subject ... + infinitive | Wenn ich die Frage stellen würde, würde ich langsam sprechen. |
| Two options | entweder ... oder ... | Wir können entweder noch einmal aufnehmen oder diese Version behalten. |
| Alternative action | statt ... zu + infinitive | Ich würde Papier verwenden, statt von einem Bildschirm abzulesen. |
Review: strong singular adjective endings
With singular material nouns without an article, the adjective carries the ending. In the nominative and accusative, feminine uses -e and neuter -es; masculine changes from -er to -en.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine: nominative → accusative | -er → -en | Starker Kaffee hilft. Wir trinken starken Kaffee. |
| Feminine: nominative and accusative | -e | Frische Milch ist da. Wir trinken frische Milch. |
| Neuter: nominative and accusative | -es | Dickes Papier liegt hier. Ich würde dickes Papier verwenden. |
Review: regular Präteritum and past-time clauses
Regular Präteritum uses -te- with personal endings; verbs such as warten add an extra e. Recall als for a particular past event or period, wenn for repeated occasions, and bis for an endpoint.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
Review: present passive, future and position
Present passive uses werden plus a past participle to describe what is being done. Futur I uses werden plus an infinitive. With zwischen, accusative marks a destination and dative marks an existing position.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present passive | wird + past participle | Das Mikrofon wird zwischen die beiden Stühle gestellt. |
| Future action | wird + infinitive | Der Schüler wird die nächste Frage stellen. |
| Existing position | zwischen + dative | Das Mikrofon steht zwischen den beiden Stühlen. |
