While our school is being improved in German
Learn to explain building work and temporary school changes using the present passive: werden + Partizip II. This puts the focus on what is being done, rather than who does it.
What you'll learn
- Describe repairs, improvements and temporary arrangements at school.
- Use present forms of werden with a past participle to describe ongoing or regular actions.
- Ask whether work is being done.
- Recognize the difference between the present passive and Futur I.

Eine neue Rampe is singular, so use wird.

Is the old fence being replaced as well?
In a yes/no passive question, wird comes first and the participle comes last.

Focus on the action
Use the present process passive when what is being done matters more than who does it. Form it with a present form of werden and Partizip II (the past participle). Despite the name 'past participle', this construction is present tense. It can describe ongoing work or repeated actions.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing work | subject + werden + … + Partizip II | Das Dach wird diese Woche repariert. |
| Regular action | subject + werden + … + Partizip II | Die Werkzeuge werden jeden Nachmittag weggeschlossen. |
Choose the right form of werden
Werden agrees with the subject. The participle stays the same.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ich | werde + Partizip II | Ich werde heute hier unterrichtet. |
| du | wirst + Partizip II | Du wirst heute hier unterrichtet. |
| er / sie / es; singular noun | wird + Partizip II | Der Zaun wird ersetzt. |
| wir | werden + Partizip II | Wir werden heute hier unterrichtet. |
| ihr | werdet + Partizip II | Ihr werdet heute hier unterrichtet. |
| sie / Sie; plural noun | werden + Partizip II | Die Klassenzimmer werden gestrichen. |
Passive statements and questions
In a main-clause statement, the form of werden is in second position and the participle goes at the end. In a yes/no question, the form of werden comes first.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject first | subject + werden + … + participle | Eine neue Rampe wird neben dem Eingang gebaut. |
| Place first | place + werden + subject + … + participle | Neben dem Eingang wird eine neue Rampe gebaut. |
| Yes/no question | werden + subject + … + participle? | Wird der alte Zaun auch ersetzt? |
Present passive, not Futur I
Werden alone does not tell you whether a sentence is passive or future. Look at the final verb form: the present passive uses a participle; Futur I uses an infinitive.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present passive | werden + Partizip II | Die Lampen werden angebracht. — The lights are being fitted. |
| Futur I contrast | werden + infinitive | Die Arbeiter werden die Lampen anbringen. — The workers will fit the lights. |
