Advice after a dental check-up in German

Use sollte plus an infinitive to discuss the dentist's recommendations and turn them into small, manageable choices. This expresses advice rather than an obligation with müssen.

    Du solltest gives gentle advice to one child. Von selbst means 'by itself'.

    We should ask the dentist about your new tooth.

    Wir sollten presents the recommendation as something to do together.

    You should use a brush with softer bristles.

    Solltest ... benutzen means 'should use', not 'must use'.

    Sollten wir ...? invites a shared decision.

Use these Konjunktiv II forms of sollen to mean 'should'. They recommend an action rather than require it.

Statements and advice questions

In a statement, the form of sollte is in second position and the infinitive goes at the end of its clause. Attach the infinitive directly, without zu. In a yes/no question, put sollte before the subject.

Advice versus obligation

Sollte means an action is advisable. Müssen means it is necessary or required. Do not replace müssen with sollte when the dentist gives an essential instruction.
