Gentle Checkup Advice in German
Use sollte + infinitive to turn check-up advice into gentle everyday German. These phrases address your baby as du; du und Papa and du und Oma take the plural form solltet. Care recommendations should follow your clinician's age-appropriate guidance.

I should write down my questions before your next check-up.
Ich takes sollte. Aufschreiben means 'to write down' and stays together as an infinitive at the end.
Nach diesem Vormittag mit so viel Trubel solltest du dich in Ruhe ausruhen.
You should have a quiet rest after this busy morning.
Sich ausruhen means 'to rest'; with du, use dich. The opening time phrase puts solltest before du.
Wir sollten anfangen, dein Zähnchen zweimal am Tag zu putzen.
We should start brushing your little tooth twice a day.
Anfangen follows sollten without zu. The activity introduced by anfangen uses zu: zu putzen.
Du und Papa solltet vor der nächsten Milchmahlzeit eine Pause machen.
You and Dad should take a break before the next feed.
Du und Papa corresponds to ihr, so use solltet. Eine Pause machen means 'to take a break'.
Ich sollte den Arzt nach dem Ausschlag auf deiner Wange fragen.
I should ask the doctor about the rash on your cheek.
Use jemanden nach etwas fragen for 'ask someone about something': den Arzt is accusative; dem Ausschlag is dative.
Wir sollten dir zu deiner Mahlzeit etwas Wasser anbieten.
We should offer you a little water with your meal.
Anbieten takes a dative recipient: dir means 'to you'. Offer water only when appropriate for your baby's age and your clinician's advice.
Du solltest etwas Zeit haben, um auf dem Boden zu krabbeln.
You should have some time to crawl on the floor.
Solltest goes with the infinitive haben. Um ... zu krabbeln explains what the time is for.
Du und Oma solltet euch zum Kuscheln einen schattigen Platz suchen.
You and Grandma should find a shady place for your cuddle.
Du und Oma takes solltet and the reflexive pronoun euch. Zum Kuscheln means 'for cuddling'.

Forms of sollte for gentle advice
The Konjunktiv II forms of sollen express advice or recommendations, usually translated as 'should'. These forms have no umlaut.

Word order and infinitives
In a statement, the conjugated modal occupies the second position and its infinitive comes at the end without zu. A time phrase can come first. A separate infinitive phrase may still require zu.

Recommendation versus necessity
Sollte presents something as advisable. Müssen expresses necessity or obligation and is stronger. Although sollte also has a past-tense use, these advice sentences mean 'should', not 'had to'.
