One Thing Then Another in German
Use nachdem (“after”) to connect small care moments into a calm, familiar routine. The nachdem clause describes the completed first action; the main clause describes what happens next.
What you'll learn
- Describe connected care routines using nachdem.
- Use the Perfekt in the nachdem clause and the present tense for the following action.
- Place the auxiliary verb at the end of the nachdem clause.
German phrases for one thing then another
Nachdem du deine Milch ausgetrunken hast, halte ich dich eine Weile aufrecht.
After you have finished your milk, I hold you upright for a while.
Austrinken means to finish a drink. Hast goes at the end of the nachdem clause.
Nachdem ich die Wassertemperatur geprüft habe, lasse ich dich sanft ins Badewasser gleiten.
After I have checked the water temperature, I gently lower you into the bath.
Ins means in das. Here it shows movement into the bathwater.
Nachdem ich dir die Haare gewaschen habe, spüle ich sie vorsichtig aus.
After I have washed your hair, I rinse it carefully.
German commonly uses dir die Haare for “your hair” in care routines. Sie refers back to the plural noun Haare.
Nachdem wir dich fertig gebadet haben, wickle ich dich in ein warmes Handtuch.
After we have finished your bath, I wrap you in a warm towel.
Dich fertig gebadet haben expresses that we have finished bathing you.
Nachdem ich dir die Windel gewechselt habe, ziehe ich dir deinen Schlafstrampler an.
After I have changed your nappy, I put your sleepsuit on.
Anziehen is separable: ziehe comes near the start of the main clause, and an goes at the end.
Nachdem du aufgewacht bist, öffnen wir zusammen die Vorhänge.
After you have woken up, we open the curtains together.
Aufwachen forms the Perfekt with sein: du bist aufgewacht.
Nachdem wir von unserem Spaziergang nach Hause zurückgekommen sind, ziehe ich dir dein Jäckchen aus.
After we have come home from our walk, I take off your little jacket.
Zurückkommen uses sein in the Perfekt. Jäckchen is an affectionate word for a little jacket.
Nachdem ich dein Zahnfleisch gereinigt habe, kuscheln wir im Schaukelstuhl.
After I have cleaned your gums, we cuddle in the rocking chair.
Zahnfleisch is singular in German, although “gums” is plural in English.

A completed action before the next routine step
For these present-time routines, use the Perfekt after nachdem and the present tense in the main clause. The Perfekt marks the first action as complete before the next step begins.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier action: Perfekt | nachdem + subject + … + past participle + haben/sein | Nachdem du deine Milch ausgetrunken hast, … |
| Following action: present tense | conjugated verb + subject + … | … halte ich dich eine Weile aufrecht. |
Word order and the comma
The conjugated verb goes last in the nachdem clause. When that clause comes first, it fills the first position of the whole sentence, so the main clause begins with its conjugated verb. Separate the clauses with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Auxiliary at the end | Nachdem ich … gewaschen habe, … | Nachdem ich dir die Haare gewaschen habe, spüle ich sie vorsichtig aus. |
| Main-clause verb before the subject | Nachdem …, öffnen wir … | Nachdem du aufgewacht bist, öffnen wir zusammen die Vorhänge. |
Choosing haben or sein
Most care actions here form the Perfekt with haben. Aufwachen uses sein because it describes a change of state; zurückkommen uses sein because it describes movement from one place to another.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Haben | ich habe geprüft / gewaschen / gewechselt | Nachdem ich dir die Windel gewechselt habe, ziehe ich dir deinen Schlafstrampler an. |
| Sein: waking up | du bist aufgewacht | Nachdem du aufgewacht bist, öffnen wir zusammen die Vorhänge. |
| Sein: returning home | wir sind zurückgekommen | Nachdem wir nach Hause zurückgekommen sind, ziehe ich dir dein Jäckchen aus. |
