Care With Clear Boundaries in German

Use clear, gentle German to explain care routines and protect your baby's comfort and privacy. These phrases address your baby directly and use modal verbs with the passive to focus on what must, can or may be done.

What you'll learn

  • Describe baby-care rules using modal verbs with the passive.
  • Build sentences with a finite modal verb, a past participle and final werden.
  • Distinguish necessity, permission, prohibition and expected care steps.
  • Use bevor to explain when a care task needs to happen.

German phrases for care with clear boundaries

  • Dein Fläschchen muss vor der nächsten Mahlzeit gereinigt werden.

Your bottle must be cleaned before the next feed.

Fläschchen is a common word for a baby's bottle. Muss gereinigt werden expresses a necessary care step.

  • Dieses Lätzchen kann mit deinen anderen Kleidungsstücken gewaschen werden.

This bib can be washed with your other clothes.

Kann gewaschen werden describes what is possible. Mit takes the dative: deinen anderen Kleidungsstücken.

  • Dein Badewasser muss geprüft werden, bevor du in die Wanne kommst.

Your bath water must be checked before you get in.

Here, geprüft refers to checking the bath water, especially its temperature. After bevor, the verb kommst goes at the end.

  • Diese Creme darf nur so verwendet werden, wie der Arzt es erklärt hat.

This cream may only be used as the doctor explained.

Darf nur sets a limit on permitted use. Use die Ärztin instead of der Arzt for a female doctor.

  • Dein Kinderwagen muss in ausreichendem Abstand zur Treppe abgestellt werden.

Your pram must be parked away from the stairs.

In ausreichendem Abstand means 'at a sufficient distance'. Abgestellt werden means 'be parked' or 'be placed'.

  • Dieses Bild von dir darf Oma gezeigt werden.

This picture of you may be shown to Grandma.

Darf gezeigt werden gives permission. Oma is the recipient and is in the dative, though its form does not change.

  • Dein Badefoto darf nicht online geteilt werden.

Your bath photo must not be shared online.

Darf nicht expresses a prohibition. Muss nicht would mean 'does not have to', not 'must not'.

  • Deine nassen Sachen sollen vor unserem Spaziergang gewechselt werden.

Your wet clothes should be changed before our walk.

Sollen presents changing the clothes as an expected care step. Sachen is an everyday word for clothes in this context.
