Building the passive with a modal verb
The process passive focuses on what happens, rather than who does it. In a statement, the finite modal verb is in second position. The past participle and werden come at the end of the main clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | Subject + finite modal + other information + Partizip II + werden | Das Foto darf mit deiner Erlaubnis geteilt werden. |
| Singular subject | das Bild + muss + gelöscht + werden | Das Bild muss gelöscht werden. |
| Plural subject | die Bilder + können + gespeichert + werden | Die Bilder können gespeichert werden. |
Permission, requirements and possibility
Choose the modal verb to match the meaning. Dürfen expresses permission, müssen expresses necessity and können expresses possibility. For an explicit rule against something, use nicht dürfen.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | darf / dürfen + Partizip II + werden | Das Klassenfoto darf gezeigt werden. |
| Requirement | muss / müssen + Partizip II + werden | Das Bild muss gelöscht werden. |
| Possibility | kann / können + Partizip II + werden | Das Gesicht kann unkenntlich gemacht werden. |
| Prohibition | darf / dürfen nicht + Partizip II + werden | Dein Name darf nicht veröffentlicht werden. |
| No obligation | muss / müssen nicht + Partizip II + werden | Das Foto muss nicht geteilt werden. |
Adding conditions and timing
Wenn introduces a condition and bevor means before. Separate these subordinate clauses with a comma and put their finite verb at the end. Without a modal verb, the present passive uses wird or werden plus a past participle.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Condition with wenn | wenn + subject + other information + finite verb | Das Bild muss gelöscht werden, wenn dein Freund nicht einverstanden ist. |
| Timing with bevor | bevor + subject + Partizip II + wird / werden | Es muss um Erlaubnis gebeten werden, bevor das Video hochgeladen wird. |
