Earlier Events Explained in German
Use the Plusquamperfekt to help your child explain what had already happened before another past event, such as a surprise, a success or a change of plans.
What you'll learn
- Form the Plusquamperfekt with hatte or war plus a past participle.
- Distinguish an earlier completed event from a later past event.
- Connect past events using als, bevor and weil.
German phrases for earlier events explained
Du hattest deine Sportsachen schon eingepackt, als ich nach Hause kam.
You had already packed your sports kit when I came home.
Hattest eingepackt marks the earlier action. Schon means 'already'; als introduces the later event.
Dein Freund war nach Hause gegangen, bevor du den fehlenden Spielstein gefunden hast.
Your friend had gone home before you found the missing game piece.
Gehen uses sein, so its Plusquamperfekt is war gegangen. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.
Wir hatten eine Zeitbegrenzung für die Bildschirmzeit vereinbart, bevor du das Spiel heruntergeladen hast.
We had agreed on a screen-time limit before you downloaded the game.
Hatten vereinbart shows that the agreement came first. Heruntergeladen is the participle of herunterladen.
Du hast dich gefreut, weil deine Gruppe das Projekt frühzeitig fertiggestellt hatte.
You were pleased because your group had finished the project early.
The earlier achievement explains the later feeling. After weil, the auxiliary hatte goes at the end.
Ich hatte die Busfahrzeiten überprüft, bevor wir zu deinem Spiel losgefahren sind.
I had checked the bus times before we left for your match.
Hatte überprüft happened before the journey. Losgefahren sind is Perfekt and describes the later event.
Deine Gäste waren schon angekommen, als ich die Snacks auf den Tisch stellte.
Your guests had already arrived when I brought out the snacks.
Ankommen uses sein. With plural Gäste, use waren angekommen.
Du konntest das Experiment erklären, weil du die Anleitung gelesen hattest.
You could explain the experiment because you had read the instructions.
Reading came first and made the explanation possible. In the weil-clause, gelesen comes before hattest.
Du warst eingeschlafen, bevor ich nach oben kam, um dir gute Nacht zu sagen.
You had fallen asleep before I came upstairs to say goodnight.
Einschlafen describes a change of state and uses sein: warst eingeschlafen. Um … zu gives the purpose of coming upstairs.

Forming the Plusquamperfekt
Use the past form of haben or sein plus the same past participle you use in the Perfekt. Keep the auxiliary choice you already know: most verbs use haben; verbs such as gehen, ankommen and einschlafen use sein.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With haben | hatte / hattest / hatten / hattet + Partizip II | Du hattest deine Sportsachen eingepackt. |
| With sein | war / warst / waren / wart + Partizip II | Deine Gäste waren angekommen. |
| Auxiliary forms by person | ich hatte/war; du hattest/warst; er/sie/es hatte/war; wir hatten/waren; ihr hattet/wart; sie/Sie hatten/waren | Wir hatten die Anleitung gelesen. |
Showing which event happened first
The Plusquamperfekt marks an event completed before another past event. The later event can be in the Präteritum or Perfekt. Bevor already makes the order clear, but the Plusquamperfekt emphasizes that the earlier action was complete.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier event | Plusquamperfekt | Ich hatte die Busfahrzeiten überprüft. |
| Later event in Präteritum | Plusquamperfekt + als + Präteritum | Du hattest schon gepackt, als ich nach Hause kam. |
| Later event in Perfekt | Plusquamperfekt + bevor + Perfekt | Ich hatte die Busfahrzeiten überprüft, bevor wir losgefahren sind. |
Word order with past-event connections
In a main clause, the conjugated auxiliary is in second position and the participle is at the end. In clauses introduced by als, bevor or weil, the conjugated verb goes at the end. Separate the clauses with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Main clause | subject + auxiliary + other information + participle | Du hattest die Anleitung gelesen. |
| Reason with weil | weil + subject + other information + participle + auxiliary | Du konntest das Experiment erklären, weil du die Anleitung gelesen hattest. |
| One past occasion with als | als + subject + other information + conjugated verb | Deine Gäste waren schon angekommen, als ich die Snacks brachte. |
| Time sequence with bevor | bevor + subject + other information + conjugated verb | Du warst eingeschlafen, bevor ich nach oben kam. |
