A completed first action with nachdem
In these task sequences, the nachdem clause uses the Perfekt: haben or sein plus a past participle. All eight source phrases use haben. The conjugated auxiliary goes at the end of the subordinate clause. The main clause uses the present tense for the next action or resulting situation. The first task can still be in the future now; it must be finished before the next action happens.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With du | Nachdem du + object + past participle + hast, … | Nachdem du die Katze gefüttert hast, kannst du dein Spiel starten. |
| With wir | Nachdem wir + object + past participle + haben, … | Nachdem wir deine Pläne besprochen haben, trägst du sie in den Kalender ein. |
| A resulting situation | Nachdem …, + present-tense result | Nachdem du den Tisch sauber gemacht hast, haben wir Platz für dein Brettspiel. |
Word order after the opening clause
Separate the clauses with a comma. When the nachdem clause comes first, it fills the first position of the sentence. The main clause therefore starts with its conjugated verb, followed by the subject. With können, the infinitive goes at the end. With a separable present-tense verb, the prefix goes at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Conjugated verb before the subject | Nachdem …, hast du / haben wir … | Nachdem du deine sauberen Sachen weggeräumt hast, hast du Platz für dein Modell. |
| Modal verb plus infinitive | Nachdem …, kannst du + object + infinitive. | Nachdem du deine Präsentation gespeichert hast, kannst du den Laptop zuklappen. |
| Separable present-tense verb | Nachdem …, trägst du + object + other details + ein. | Nachdem wir deine Pläne besprochen haben, trägst du sie in den Kalender ein. |
