Small Habits Matter in German

Small Habits Matter: Use je ... desto to talk together about how small changes can make hobbies and responsibilities easier.

What you'll learn

  • Describe connections between habits and results.
  • Put the verb at the end of the je clause.
  • Place the verb directly after the full desto comparative phrase.
  • Use useful comparatives such as besser, mehr and seltener.

German phrases for small habits matter

  • Je regelmäßiger du übst, desto selbstbewusster spielst du.

The more regularly you practise, the more confidently you play.

Regelmäßiger means 'more regularly'. Selbstbewusster describes greater confidence.

  • Je früher du mit deinem Projekt anfängst, desto mehr Zeit hast du für Änderungen.

The earlier you start your project, the more time you have for changes.

Use mit etwas anfangen for 'start something'. In the je clause, the separable verb stays together: anfängst.

  • Je klarer du deine Idee erklärst, desto besser versteht dich deine Gruppe.

The more clearly you explain your idea, the better your group understands you.

Deine Gruppe is singular, so the verb is versteht.

  • Je länger du nachts am Handy bist, desto müder fühlst du dich morgens.

The longer you stay on your phone at night, the more tired you feel in the morning.

Am Handy sein is a natural way to say 'be on your phone'. Sich fühlen means 'to feel'.

  • Je fairer ihr euch die Hausarbeit aufteilt, desto seltener streitet ihr euch.

The more fairly you share the chores, the less often you argue.

Ihr addresses two or more people. Seltener means 'less often'; sich streiten means 'to argue'.

  • Je sorgfältiger du deine Ausgaben planst, desto länger reicht dein Taschengeld.

The more carefully you plan your spending, the longer your pocket money lasts.

Ausgaben means 'spending' or 'expenses'. Reichen describes how long the money lasts before it runs out.

  • Je öfter du diese Strecke mit mir fährst, desto sicherer fühlst du dich.

The more often you cycle this route with me, the safer you feel.

When cycling is already the topic, diese Strecke fahren naturally means cycling this route. You can add mit dem Fahrrad to make it explicit.

  • Je besser du dich auf die Übernachtung vorbereitest, desto entspannter fühlst du dich.

The better you prepare for the sleepover, the more relaxed you feel.

Sich auf etwas vorbereiten means 'to prepare for something'. Die Übernachtung can refer to a sleepover when the context is clear.
