Growing Into Our Rhythm in German
Growing Into Our Rhythm: Describe the small patterns you notice in your baby's day. Use je ... desto to connect two changes, like English “the more ..., the more ...”. These gentle phrases address your baby with du.
What you'll learn
- Describe connections between your baby's activities, surroundings and reactions.
- Place the finite verb at the end of the je clause.
- Place the finite verb immediately after the desto comparative phrase.
- Use comparative forms such as müder, ruhiger, öfter and besser.
German phrases for growing into our rhythm
Je müder du bist, desto langsamer lassen wir es angehen.
The more tired you are, the more slowly we take things.
Es langsam angehen lassen means “to take things slowly.” Bist ends the je clause; lassen follows desto langsamer.
Je ruhiger es im Zimmer ist, desto leichter kommst du zur Ruhe.
The quieter the room is, the more easily you settle.
Zur Ruhe kommen means “to settle” or “to calm down.” Leichter means “more easily” here.
Je länger du herumkrabbelst, desto müder wirst du.
The longer you crawl around, the more tired you become.
Herumkrabbeln means “to crawl around.” Werden with an adjective describes a change: du wirst müder means “you become more tired.”
Je öfter wir dieses Buch lesen, desto vertrauter werden dir die Bilder.
The more often we read this book, the more familiar the pictures become.
Dir makes “familiar to you” explicit. Die Bilder is the plural subject, so the verb is werden.
Je näher ich dich bei mir halte, desto ruhiger wirkst du.
The closer I hold you, the calmer you seem.
Bei mir means “close to me” in this context. Wirken with an adjective means “to seem” or “to appear.”
Je behutsamer ich das Wasser gieße, desto entspannter bleibst du.
The more gently I pour the water, the more relaxed you stay.
Behutsam means “gentle and careful.” Bleiben with an adjective means “to stay” in that state.
Je öfter du dieses Wort hörst, desto deutlicher versuchst du, es zu sagen.
The more often you hear this word, the more clearly you try to say it.
Versuchen can be followed by a zu-infinitive: es zu sagen means “to say it.” Deutlicher describes the attempted speech.
Je besser ich deine kleinen Signale kenne, desto eher merke ich, dass du eine Pause brauchst.
The better I know your little signals, the sooner I notice that you need a break.
Besser is the comparative of gut. Eher means “sooner” here. The dass clause also places its finite verb, brauchst, at the end.

Linking two changes with je ... desto
Use je ... desto when one change goes together with another. Both parts use a comparative, and a comma separates the clauses. The finite verb—the verb marked for person and tense—goes at the end of the je clause. In the main clause, the whole desto comparative phrase occupies the first position, so the finite verb comes immediately after it.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Je clause: verb at the end | je + comparative + subject + other information + finite verb | Je öfter wir dieses Buch lesen, ... |
| Desto clause: verb in second position | desto + comparative + finite verb + subject + other information | ... desto ruhiger wirkst du. |
| Complete comparison | Je ..., desto ... . | Je länger du herumkrabbelst, desto müder wirst du. |
Building and using comparatives
Many German comparatives add -er; some also change their vowel. A few have irregular forms. Unlike English, German usually uses the same form whether the comparative describes a state or how an action happens. In these sentences, do not add adjective endings to the comparative.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Regular forms | müde → müder; ruhig → ruhiger; langsam → langsamer | Je müder du bist, desto langsamer lassen wir es angehen. |
| Forms with an umlaut | lang → länger; nah → näher | Je näher ich dich bei mir halte, desto ruhiger wirkst du. |
| Frequency | oft → öfter | Je öfter wir dieses Buch lesen, desto vertrauter werden dir die Bilder. |
| Irregular forms | gut → besser; früh → früher or eher (“sooner” here) | Je besser ich deine kleinen Signale kenne, desto eher merke ich, dass du eine Pause brauchst. |
