  • Distinguish recommendations with sollte from necessity with müssen.

jemandem einen Rat geben

Rat is countable here: einen Rat means a piece of advice. The recipient takes the dative.

sich auf etwas einigen

to agree on something

Use a reflexive pronoun and auf + accusative: Wir einigen uns auf eine Schlafenszeit.

Advice with sollte + infinitive

For advice, use the Konjunktiv II form of sollen with an infinitive. It usually means “should” and does not refer to the past in these sentences.

UseFormExample
I / he / she / itich / er / sie / es sollte + infinitiveIch sollte zuerst zuhören.
You: one familiar persondu solltest + infinitiveDu solltest eine Pause machen.
We / they / formal youwir / sie / Sie sollten + infinitiveWir sollten zusammen entscheiden.
You: several familiar peopleihr solltet + infinitiveIhr solltet die Regeln besprechen.

Word order

In a main statement, the conjugated modal verb occupies the second position, and the infinitive goes at the end. In clauses introduced by bevor or wenn, the conjugated verb goes at the end.

UseFormExample
Main clausesubject + sollte form + other information + infinitiveWir sollten etwas Zeit freihalten.
Before-clausebevor + subject + other information + conjugated verbIch sollte zuhören, bevor ich einen Rat gebe.
If-clausewenn + subject + other information + conjugated verbDu solltest es sagen, wenn dein Knie wehtut.

Recommendation versus necessity

Sollte gives advice; müssen expresses necessity or obligation. Advice can still feel firm depending on your tone. Adding vielleicht (“perhaps”) can make a suggestion gentler.

UseFormExample
Recommendationsolltest + infinitiveDu solltest eine Pause machen. — You should take a break.
Necessitymusst + infinitiveDu musst eine Pause machen. — You must take a break.
