Giving advice with sollte
For advice, use the Konjunktiv II of sollen plus an infinitive. It means should or ought to. The form changes with the subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | ich sollte + infinitive | Ich sollte Wasser einpacken. |
| You: one person, informal | du solltest + infinitive | Du solltest deine Zähne putzen. |
| He, she or it | er/sie/es sollte + infinitive | Dein Bruder sollte eine weichere Zahnbürste benutzen. |
| We, they or formal you | wir/sie/Sie sollten + infinitive | Wir sollten den Zahnarzt fragen. |
| You: more than one person, informal | ihr solltet + infinitive | Ihr solltet euren Mundschutz tragen. |
Word order
In a main clause, the conjugated form of sollte occupies the second position, and the infinitive goes at the end. A subject containing du and another person takes solltet.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple advice | subject + sollte form + other information + infinitive | Wir sollten einen Snack mit weniger Zucker auswählen. |
| A combined subject | du und another person + solltet + other information + infinitive | Du und deine Schwester solltet zwei Minuten lang putzen. |
| Adding a condition | advice clause + wenn + subject + other information + conjugated verb | Du solltest deinen Wackelzahn in Ruhe lassen, wenn er wehtut. |
Advice versus necessity
Sollte gives a recommendation. Müssen expresses necessity or obligation and is stronger. When speaking gently to a child, du solltest often fits better than du musst.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation | du solltest + infinitive | Du solltest deine Zähne putzen. — You should brush your teeth. |
| Necessity or obligation | du musst + infinitive | Du musst deine Zähne putzen. — You must brush your teeth. |
