Little Helpful Details in German

Add helpful details to everyday conversations with your child. Practise adjective endings after dative prepositions when there is no article: mit warmem Wasser, bei gutem Wetter and mit sauberen Händen.

What you'll learn

  • Describe everyday actions using natural German phrases.
  • Use strong adjective endings in the dative without an article: -em, -er and -en.
  • Add the dative plural noun ending -n where required.
  • Recognise that etwas Geduld does not contain an adjective.

German phrases for little helpful details

  • Wir spülen deine Brotdose mit warmem Wasser aus.

We rinse your lunchbox with warm water.

Mit takes the dative. Wasser is neuter, so warm becomes warmem. Ausspülen is separable: spülen … aus.

  • Mit etwas Geduld können wir diese Hausaufgabe gemeinsam lösen.

With a little patience, we can solve this homework problem together.

Etwas Geduld means 'a little patience'. Etwas stays unchanged; there is no adjective here to receive a dative ending.

  • Bei hellem Licht kannst du die kleinen Wörter besser lesen.

You can read the small words better in bright light.

Bei takes the dative. Licht is neuter, so use hellem without an article.

  • Bei gutem Wetter genießen wir den Spaziergang zur Schule.

We enjoy the walk to school in good weather.

German uses bei for weather conditions. Wetter is neuter: bei gutem Wetter.

  • Nach langem Warten kannst du endlich dem Schwimmverein beitreten.

After a long wait, you can finally join the swimming club.

Nach takes the dative. Warten is a neuter noun formed from a verb, so use langem and capitalise Warten. Beitreten also takes the dative: dem Schwimmverein.

  • Du hörst dir die Geschichte vom Zahn mit großem Interesse an.

You listen to the tooth story with great interest.

Interesse is neuter: mit großem Interesse. Sich etwas anhören means to listen to something.

  • Im Sportverein fühlst du dich mit guten Freunden sicherer.

You feel more confident at the sports club with good friends.

In the dative plural, gut becomes guten and Freunde becomes Freunden. Sich sicherer fühlen means to feel more confident or secure.

  • Mit sauberen Händen kannst du mir helfen, dein Mittagessen vorzubereiten.

With clean hands, you can help me prepare your lunch.

The plural Hände becomes Händen in the dative, and sauber becomes sauberen. Helfen takes the dative pronoun mir.

Strong adjective endings in the dative

Without an article such as dem or einer, an adjective takes a strong ending. In the dative, use -em for masculine and neuter, -er for feminine, and -en for plural nouns.

UseFormExample
Masculineadjective + -emmit gutem Mut — with good courage
Neuteradjective + -emmit warmem Wasser — with warm water
Feminineadjective + -ermit großer Geduld — with great patience
Pluraladjective + -enmit sauberen Händen — with clean hands

Dative prepositions and plural nouns

Mit, bei and nach always take the dative. In the dative plural, the noun usually gains -n as well as the adjective taking -en. Do not add another -n if the plural already ends in -n, and do not add it to plurals ending in -s.

UseFormExample
Plural ending in -eFreunde → Freundenmit guten Freunden — with good friends
Plural with an umlautHände → Händenmit sauberen Händen — with clean hands
Plural already ending in -nSchwestern → Schwesternmit älteren Schwestern — with older sisters
Plural ending in -sAutos → Autosmit kleinen Autos — with small cars

A little patience: etwas Geduld

Etwas means 'some' or 'a little' before a noun and does not change its form. Geduld is still dative after mit, but there is no adjective ending to see. If you add an adjective, it takes the strong feminine dative ending -er.

UseFormExample
Without an adjectivemit etwas + nounmit etwas Geduld — with a little patience
With an adjectivemit etwas + adjective ending in -er + feminine nounmit etwas zusätzlicher Geduld — with a little extra patience
