Your Photo Choices in German
Use these phrases to talk with your child about photo permissions, privacy and comfort. German modal verbs with the passive help explain what may, must or does not have to happen to a photo.
What you'll learn
- Discuss permission to take, share and display photos.
- Build passive sentences with a finite modal verb, a past participle and werden.
- Distinguish between prohibition with darf nicht and lack of obligation with muss nicht.
German phrases for your photo choices
Dein Foto darf nur mit unserer Erlaubnis geteilt werden.
Your photo may only be shared with our permission.
Darf expresses permission. Nur mit unserer Erlaubnis means that sharing requires our permission.
Darf dieses Bild deinen Großeltern gezeigt werden?
May this picture be shown to your grandparents?
Put darf first in a yes/no question. Deinen Großeltern is dative because the grandparents are the people being shown the picture.
Dein Name darf nicht unter das Klassenfoto gedruckt werden.
Your name must not be printed under the class photo.
Darf nicht expresses a prohibition. Unter das Klassenfoto describes where the name is to be placed by printing.
Dieses Bild kann in unserem Familienalbum aufbewahrt werden.
This picture can be kept in our family album.
Kann expresses a possibility or available option. In unserem Familienalbum uses the dative to describe a location.
In der Umkleide dürfen keine Fotos gemacht werden.
Photos must not be taken in the changing room.
German uses Fotos machen for taking photos. Dürfen agrees with the plural Fotos; keine means no photos are allowed.
Das Foto muss gelöscht werden, wenn wir unsere Erlaubnis zurückziehen.
The photo must be deleted if we withdraw our permission.
Muss expresses a requirement. In the wenn clause, the verb zurückziehen goes at the end.
Kann dein Gesicht unkenntlich gemacht werden, bevor das Mannschaftsfoto geteilt wird?
Can your face be hidden before the team photo is shared?
Unkenntlich gemacht means made unrecognizable, for example by blurring or covering the face. The bevor clause ends with geteilt wird.
Dein Bild muss nicht in der Aula aufgehängt werden.
Your picture does not have to be displayed in the school hall.
Muss nicht means it is not required, not that it is forbidden. Aula means a school's assembly hall; a corridor is a Schulflur.

Present process passive with modal verbs
This passive focuses on what happens to a photo, name or face rather than who does it. In a main statement, the conjugated modal is in second position. The past participle and werden come at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | subject + darf/dürfen + other information + past participle + werden | Dein Foto darf geteilt werden. |
| Requirement | subject + muss/müssen + other information + past participle + werden | Das Foto muss gelöscht werden. |
| Possibility | subject + kann/können + other information + past participle + werden | Dieses Bild kann aufbewahrt werden. |
Forbidden or simply not required?
Use dürfen with nicht or kein- for English must not. Use müssen with nicht for does not have to. These meanings are very different.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Forbidden | darf nicht + past participle + werden | Dein Name darf nicht gedruckt werden. |
| No photos allowed | dürfen keine Fotos + past participle + werden | Hier dürfen keine Fotos gemacht werden. |
| Not required | muss nicht + past participle + werden | Dein Bild muss nicht aufgehängt werden. |
Questions and plural subjects
In yes/no questions, put the modal first. The modal agrees with the subject, while the final werden stays unchanged.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular question | Darf + singular subject + other information + past participle + werden? | Darf dieses Bild gezeigt werden? |
| Plural question | Dürfen + plural subject + other information + past participle + werden? | Dürfen diese Bilder gezeigt werden? |
Adding conditions and timing
Wenn means if in these phrases, and bevor means before. Both introduce subordinate clauses, where the conjugated verb comes last. A passive clause without a modal uses conjugated werden: geteilt wird.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Condition | wenn + subject + other information + conjugated verb | Das Foto muss gelöscht werden, wenn wir unsere Erlaubnis zurückziehen. |
| Timing with a passive clause | bevor + subject + past participle + conjugated werden | Dein Gesicht kann verdeckt werden, bevor das Foto geteilt wird. |
