German phrases for look how far
Als du in die Schule gekommen bist, bin ich mit dir ins Klassenzimmer gegangen.
When you started school, I walked into the classroom with you.
Als introduces the one-time milestone of starting school. In die Schule kommen can mean starting school for the first time.
Immer wenn du vor der Schule nervös warst, habe ich deine Hand gehalten.
Whenever you felt nervous before school, I held your hand.
Immer wenn describes repeated occasions. Vor der Schule means before the school day here.
Als du deinen ersten Zahn verloren hast, haben wir ein Foto gemacht.
When you lost your first tooth, we took a photo.
Losing the first tooth is a single past event, so use als.
Immer wenn ein Zahn locker war, hast du ihn dir im Spiegel angeschaut.
Whenever a tooth was loose, you checked it in the mirror.
Immer wenn describes what happened each time. Ihn refers back to the masculine noun Zahn.
Als du sechs warst, haben wir jeden Abend dieses Tierbuch gelesen.
When you were six, we read that animal book every evening.
Use als because being six is one past period, even though reading happened every evening. German uses dieses here to refer to a particular remembered book.
Immer wenn wir ein Kapitel zu Ende gelesen hatten, hast du nach einem weiteren gefragt.
Whenever we finished a chapter, you asked for another one.
Immer wenn marks the repeated pattern. Gelesen hatten makes clear that finishing the chapter came before asking for another.
Als du dem Sportverein beigetreten bist, bin ich beim ersten Training dabeigeblieben.
When you joined the sports club, I stayed for the first session.
Joining the club is a single event. Beitreten takes the dative: dem Sportverein.
Immer wenn du vom Training nach Hause gekommen bist, hast du mir von den Spielen erzählt.
Whenever you came home from practice, you told me about the games.
Immer wenn describes repeated homecomings. Von etwas erzählen means to tell someone about something.

Als or temporal wenn?
Use als for one event or one period in the past. Use wenn for occasions that happened repeatedly in the past. Adding immer makes the meaning “whenever” especially clear.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Single past event | als + past event | Als du deinen ersten Zahn verloren hast, haben wir ein Foto gemacht. |
| Single past period | als + past period | Als du sechs warst, haben wir jeden Abend dieses Tierbuch gelesen. |
| Repeated past occasions | immer wenn + repeated occasion | Immer wenn du nervös warst, habe ich deine Hand gehalten. |
Temporal wenn versus conditional wenn
Conditional wenn means “if” and introduces a condition. Temporal wenn means “when” or “whenever” and places something in time. In these family memories, immer wenn refers to occasions that actually happened repeatedly.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal: whenever | immer wenn + remembered occasion | Immer wenn du vom Training gekommen bist, hast du mir davon erzählt. |
| Conditional: if | wenn + condition | Wenn du möchtest, lese ich noch ein Kapitel. |
Word order and past forms
Als and wenn send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause. When that clause comes first, the main clause starts with its conjugated verb. The perfect tense is common in spoken memories; war and warst are natural past forms of sein. The past perfect can show that one action was already complete before another.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb at the end | als/wenn + subject + ... + conjugated verb | Als du sechs warst, ... |
| Perfect tense in the time clause | als/wenn + subject + ... + participle + haben/sein | Als du deinen ersten Zahn verloren hast, ... |
| Main clause after the time clause | time clause + comma + conjugated verb + subject + ... | Als du sechs warst, haben wir jeden Abend gelesen. |
| An earlier completed action | participle + hatte/hatten | Immer wenn wir ein Kapitel zu Ende gelesen hatten, hast du nach einem weiteren gefragt. |
