Als: one past event or period
Use als for something that happened once in the past, or for one particular past period. The period can be long: what matters is that you are describing it as one time in your life.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One event | als + past event | Als du zum ersten Mal vorgelesen hast, war ich stolz. |
| One period | als + past period | Als ich neu in der Schule war, war ich oft unsicher. |
Wenn: repeated past occasions
Use temporal wenn for occasions that happened repeatedly in the past. Immer wenn means “whenever” or “every time” and makes the repetition especially clear. Here, wenn tells us when something regularly happened; it does not introduce an “if” condition.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated occasions | wenn + repeated past situation | Wenn wir geübt haben, hast du denselben Satz ausgesucht. |
| Explicit repetition | immer wenn + repeated past situation | Immer wenn ich unsicher war, habe ich nach meinem Namensschild gesucht. |
Word order with als and wenn
In an als or wenn clause, the finite verb goes at the end. When this time clause comes first, put a comma after it and begin the main clause with its finite verb.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Als clause first | Als … finite verb, finite verb + subject … | Als du vorgelesen hast, war ich stolz. |
| Wenn clause first | Immer wenn … finite verb, finite verb + subject … | Immer wenn ich unsicher war, habe ich nach meinem Namensschild gesucht. |
