Standing for class representative in German

Help your child prepare to stand for class representative by making realistic promises about listening, sharing ideas and supporting others. Use Futur I to express clear future commitments and predictions.

What you'll learn

  • Make realistic promises using werden and an infinitive.
  • Ask about someone's future commitment.
  • Use wahrscheinlich to make a prediction rather than a promise.
  • Promise actions you can control, rather than results you cannot guarantee.

I will listen carefully to everyone's ideas.

Ich werde ... anhören makes a clear commitment to listen.

Will you tell the class about our suggestion?

In this yes/no question, wirst comes first and erzählen comes last.

We will ask for more shade in the playground.

This promises to make a request, not to guarantee more shade.

I will write down the questions before the meeting.

The complete infinitive aufschreiben stays together at the end.

  • Du wirst wahrscheinlich mehrere unterschiedliche Meinungen hören.

You will probably hear several different opinions.

Wahrscheinlich marks this as a likely prediction, not a certainty.

I will explain our idea without shouting.

The future commitment is ich werde ... erklären; erklären ends the main clause.

  • Nicht alle werden jedem Vorschlag zustimmen.

Not everyone will agree with every suggestion.

This predicts disagreement without suggesting that everyone will disagree.

Whatever the result, I will support you.

Ich werde dich unterstützen is a promise of support regardless of the outcome.

Forming Futur I

Use a present-tense form of werden plus the infinitive of the action verb. In a statement, werden takes the second position and the infinitive goes at the end of its clause. Do not add zu to the future infinitive.

UseFormExample
ichich werde + infinitiveIch werde die Fragen aufschreiben.
dudu wirst + infinitiveDu wirst unterschiedliche Meinungen hören.

Questions about future actions

For a yes/no question, put the form of werden first, followed by the subject. Keep the action infinitive at the end.

UseFormExample
Ask about a commitmentWirst + du + ... + infinitive?
Ask about a shared planWerden + wir + ... + infinitive?Werden wir die Fragen aufschreiben?

Commitments and predictions

Futur I can express a deliberate promise or a prediction. Context shows which meaning is intended. Wahrscheinlich means 'probably' and makes a prediction less certain. German also often uses the present tense for future events; here, Futur I highlights the commitment or expectation.

UseFormExample
Promiseich werde + action infinitiveIch werde dich unterstützen.
Likely predictionwerden + wahrscheinlich + ... + infinitiveDu wirst wahrscheinlich mehrere unterschiedliche Meinungen hören.
Prediction about disagreementnicht alle + werden + ... + infinitiveNicht alle werden jedem Vorschlag zustimmen.
