Promises We Make in German

Use clear, supportive promises as your child takes on new responsibilities. German Futur I uses a form of werden plus an infinitive to express future commitments and predictions.

What you'll learn

  • Make supportive promises using ich werde and wir werden.
  • Express predictions using du wirst and plural forms of werden.
  • Place the infinitive at the end of the main clause.
  • Use present-tense subordinate clauses to describe future timing.

German phrases for promises we make

  • Ich werde dir morgen helfen, deine Rede zu üben.

I will help you practise your speech tomorrow.

Helfen takes the dative: dir means 'you'. The future construction is werde ... helfen; the extra infinitive clause explains what you will help with.

  • Du wirst als Klassensprecher oder Klassensprecherin viel lernen.

You will learn a lot as class representative.

Use the title that fits your child: Klassensprecher or Klassensprecherin. Du wirst ... lernen expresses a prediction.

  • Wir werden nach dem Abendessen über deine Ideen sprechen.

We will discuss your ideas after dinner.

Über etwas sprechen means 'to discuss something'. Nach takes the dative: nach dem Abendessen.

  • Ich werde zuhören, bevor ich dir einen Rat gebe.

I will listen before I give you advice.

Zuhören stays together as an infinitive. After bevor, the conjugated verb goes last: bevor ich dir einen Rat gebe.

  • Deine Mitschülerinnen und Mitschüler werden deine Hilfe schätzen.

Your classmates will appreciate your help.

The plural subject takes werden. Schätzen means 'to appreciate' or 'to value' here.

  • Ihr werdet zusammen eine faire Lösung finden.

You will find a fair solution together.

Ihr addresses your child and the others involved. Its Futur I form is werdet ... finden.

  • Ich werde dir die endgültige Entscheidung überlassen.

I will leave the final decision to you.

Jemandem etwas überlassen means 'to leave something to someone'. Dir identifies the person who gets to decide.

  • Wir werden feiern, wenn das Projekt fertig ist.

We will celebrate when the project is finished.

Wenn introduces the future occasion here. German normally uses the present tense in this clause: fertig ist.

Building Futur I

Conjugate werden to match the subject and put the main verb in the infinitive at the end of the main clause. Any following subordinate or infinitive clause has its own structure.

UseFormExample
Iich werde + infinitiveIch werde dir helfen.
You: one persondu wirst + infinitiveDu wirst viel lernen.
Wewir werden + infinitiveWir werden deine Ideen besprechen.
You: several peopleihr werdet + infinitiveIhr werdet eine Lösung finden.
Theysie werden + infinitiveDeine Mitschülerinnen und Mitschüler werden deine Hilfe schätzen.

Promises and predictions

Futur I can signal a commitment or a prediction; context tells you which. German also often uses the present tense for future plans, especially with time words such as morgen. Werden can make a commitment more explicit.

UseFormExample
Commitmentich werde / wir werden + infinitiveIch werde dir die Entscheidung überlassen.
Predictionsubject + conjugated werden + infinitiveDu wirst viel lernen.

Future timing with bevor and wenn

Bevor means 'before'; wenn can mean 'when' for a future event. These conjunctions send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause. Use the present tense there even when the event is in the future.

UseFormExample
Beforebevor + subject + other information + conjugated verbIch werde zuhören, bevor ich dir einen Rat gebe.
Whenwenn + subject + other information + conjugated verbWir werden feiern, wenn das Projekt fertig ist.

More examples

Ich werde dir helfen, aber du wirst selbst entscheiden.

I will help you, but you will decide for yourself.

Both main clauses use Futur I. This combines parental support with the child's independence.

Wir werden zusammen aufräumen, wenn die Feier vorbei ist.

We will tidy up together when the celebration is over.

Aufräumen stays together as the final infinitive. The wenn-clause uses present-tense ist.
