What you'll learn

  • Describe your child's growing independence using natural German phrases.
  • Use als for a one-time past event or a particular past period.
  • Use immer wenn to mean whenever on repeated past occasions.
  • Distinguish temporal wenn, meaning when or whenever, from conditional wenn, meaning if.
  • Place verbs correctly in sentences beginning with als or wenn.

Key words

einem Verein beitreten

to join a club

Beitreten takes the dative and forms the perfect with sein: du bist dem Verein beigetreten.

das Training

practice; training

Use zum Training gehen for going to sports practice. For practising a presentation or another skill, use üben.

einen Vortrag halten

to give a presentation or talk

The perfect form is einen Vortrag gehalten haben.

selbst

oneself; by oneself

In these phrases, selbst emphasizes that your child did something without you doing it for them.

bei jemandem übernachten

to stay overnight at someone's home

Bei takes the dative: bei Freunden. With a name, say bei Maya.

vor dem Schlafengehen

before bed; before going to sleep

Schlafengehen is used as a noun here, so it begins with a capital letter.

Als: a single past event or period

Use als for something that happened once in the past, or for one particular past period. The period can last a long time: being nine still takes als when you describe that stage as a whole.

UseFormExample
Single eventals + past eventAls du deinen ersten Vortrag gehalten hast, habe ich hinten gesessen.
Particular past periodals + past stateAls du neun warst, hast du Hilfe beim Planen deiner Hausaufgaben gebraucht.

Temporal wenn: repeated past occasions

Use wenn for repeated occasions in the past. Adding immer makes the meaning whenever or every time especially clear. A time expression such as last winter does not decide the choice: ask whether you mean one event or repeated occasions.

UseFormExample
Repeated routineimmer wenn + repeated past situationImmer wenn du letzten Winter zum Training gegangen bist, hast du deine Tasche selbst überprüft.
Temporal versus conditionaltemporal wenn = when/whenever; conditional wenn = ifImmer wenn du einen Vortrag geübt hast, habe ich dir zugehört.

Word order after als and wenn

Als and wenn introduce subordinate clauses, where the conjugated verb goes at the end. With the perfect tense, the auxiliary comes after the past participle. If this clause comes first, the main clause begins with its conjugated verb immediately after the comma.

UseFormExample
Simple pastAls + subject + details + conjugated verb, main-clause verb + subject ...Als du neun warst, hast du Hilfe gebraucht.
Perfect tenseImmer wenn + subject + details + past participle + auxiliary, main-clause verb + subject ...Immer wenn du einen Vortrag geübt hast, habe ich dir zugehört.

Past tenses in everyday conversation

The perfect tense is common for past actions in spoken German. The simple past forms warst and hattest are also very natural in conversation. Choosing als or wenn depends on the time meaning, not on which past tense you use.

UseFormExample
Perfect for actionshaben/sein + past participleDu hast deine Sachen selbst gepackt. Du bist zum Training gegangen.
Common simple past formssein → du warst; haben → du hattestAls du neun warst, … / Immer wenn du ein großes Projekt hattest, …
