Growing Day By Day in German
Remember your baby’s first discoveries and comforting routines. Use als for a single past event or period, and temporal wenn for repeated past occasions.
What you'll learn
- Describe first milestones using als.
- Describe repeated past routines using immer wenn.
- Distinguish temporal wenn, meaning “when” or “whenever,” from conditional wenn, meaning “if.”
- Place verbs correctly in sentences beginning with als or wenn.
German phrases for growing day by day
Als du zum ersten Mal nach Hause gekommen bist, hast du in unserem Zimmer geschlafen.
When you first came home, you slept in our room.
Als marks this first homecoming as a single past event. Zum ersten Mal means “for the first time.”
Immer wenn du damals nachts aufgewacht bist, habe ich dich fest im Arm gehalten.
Whenever you woke at night back then, I held you close.
Immer wenn highlights repeated occasions. Damals means “back then,” and nachts means “at night.”
Als dein erster Zahn durchgekommen ist, hast du auf allem herumgekaut.
When your first tooth appeared, you chewed on everything.
Als introduces a single milestone. For a tooth, durchkommen means “to come through.”
Immer wenn dir letzten Monat das Zahnfleisch wehgetan hat, haben wir dir einen kühlen Beißring gegeben.
Whenever your gums hurt last month, we gave you a cool teething ring.
These are repeated occasions within last month, so use wenn. German uses the singular das Zahnfleisch for “gums.”
Als du zum ersten Mal Brei probiert hast, hast du ein lustiges Gesicht gemacht.
When you tried porridge for the first time, you made a funny face.
Brei is a natural word for a baby’s porridge or other soft, spoon-fed food.
Immer wenn ich damals dein Fläschchen zubereitet habe, hast du meine Hände beobachtet.
Whenever I prepared your bottle back then, you watched my hands.
Dein Fläschchen refers affectionately to your baby’s feeding bottle. Wenn presents bottle preparation as a repeated routine.
Als du zum ersten Mal durch das Zimmer gekrabbelt bist, bin ich so stolz gewesen.
When you crawled across the room for the first time, I was so proud.
Krabbeln means “to crawl.” You can also say war ich so stolz; war is very common when recalling feelings.
Immer wenn wir letzten Winter mit dem Kinderwagen unterwegs gewesen sind, bist du eingeschlafen.
Whenever we went out in the pram last winter, you fell asleep.
Mit dem Kinderwagen unterwegs sein means “to be out and about with the pram.” Wenn marks repeated outings.

zum ersten Mal
for the first time
Useful for first discoveries and milestones. Mal is a noun here, so it has a capital letter.
damals
back then; at that time
Sets a situation in the past but does not itself tell you whether it happened once or repeatedly.
jemanden im Arm halten
to hold someone in your arms
Use an accusative object: Ich halte dich im Arm means “I hold you in my arms.”
das Zahnfleisch
gums
A singular noun in German. Das Zahnfleisch tut dir weh means “Your gums hurt.”
der Beißring
teething ring
After geben, the thing given is accusative: Wir geben dir einen Beißring.
das Fläschchen
little bottle; baby’s feeding bottle
The ending -chen makes a diminutive. All nouns ending in -chen are neuter.
einschlafen
to fall asleep
Describes the change into sleep, unlike schlafen, “to sleep.” Its Perfekt form uses sein: Du bist eingeschlafen.
Als: one past event or period
Use als for a particular past event or a single past period. The period can be long: als does not mean that something lasted only a moment.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Single event | als + past event | Als dein erster Zahn durchgekommen ist, hast du auf allem herumgekaut. |
| Single period | als + past situation | Als du noch ein Baby warst, hast du in unserem Zimmer geschlafen. |
Temporal wenn: repeated past occasions
Use wenn for occasions that happened repeatedly in the past. Immer wenn makes “whenever” especially clear. A time expression such as letzten Monat can contain many separate occasions; it does not automatically require als.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated routine | immer wenn + repeated past occasion | Immer wenn ich damals dein Fläschchen zubereitet habe, hast du meine Hände beobachtet. |
| Repeated occasions within one month | immer wenn + occasion + past time expression | Immer wenn dir letzten Monat das Zahnfleisch wehgetan hat, haben wir dir einen kühlen Beißring gegeben. |
Temporal wenn versus conditional wenn
You may already know wenn meaning “if.” Temporal wenn tells us when something happened; conditional wenn gives a condition. Context determines the meaning.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal: whenever | wenn = on each occasion that | Immer wenn du damals nachts aufgewacht bist, habe ich dich fest im Arm gehalten. |
| Conditional: if | wenn = on condition that | Wenn du möchtest, lese ich dir eine Geschichte vor. |
Verb position and past tense
Als and wenn introduce subordinate clauses, where the conjugated verb goes at the end. When this clause comes first, the main clause begins with its conjugated verb. These memories mostly use Perfekt, a common spoken past tense.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subordinate clause | als/wenn + subject + other information + past participle + auxiliary | Als du zum ersten Mal Brei probiert hast, ... |
| Following main clause | conjugated verb + subject + other information | ... hast du ein lustiges Gesicht gemacht. |
| Common alternative with sein | war / warst instead of bin / bist gewesen | Als du zum ersten Mal durch das Zimmer gekrabbelt bist, war ich so stolz. |
