Destination or position?
These two-way prepositions take the accusative to show where something is being put (wohin?) and the dative to show where it is (wo?). The key is destination versus position, not simply whether any movement occurs.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| an — on, attached to | Accusative: an die Wand | Dative: an der Wand | Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. Das Bild hängt an der Wand. |

Putting something somewhere versus describing its position
In these patterns, the action verb has a direct object: the thing being placed. In the position sentence, that thing becomes the subject. Hängen has the same present-tense forms for both meanings. German present tense also expresses English 'am hanging' or 'is standing'.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging | Action: ich hänge | Position: es hängt | Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. Es hängt an der Wand. |
| Upright placement | Action: ich stelle | Position: er steht | Ich stelle den Korb vor das Sofa. Er steht vor dem Sofa. |
| Flat placement | Action: ich lege | Position: sie liegt | Ich lege die Spielmatte vor das Sofa. Sie liegt vor dem Sofa. |
Word order with jetzt
After und, a new main clause can begin with jetzt ('now'). The conjugated verb comes next, followed by the subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Now it is in place | und + jetzt + verb + subject + place | … und jetzt steht er zwischen dem Sessel und dem Sofa. |
