Everything In Place in German

Give school things a familiar home and make mornings easier. Practise describing where to put things and where they are, using an, hinter, vor, über and zwischen.

What you'll learn

  • Give simple instructions for putting school things away.
  • Use the accusative for destinations and the dative for positions.
  • Choose hängen, stellen or legen for placing things, and hängen, stehen or liegen for their positions.

German phrases for everything in place

  • Häng deinen Schwimmbeutel an die Wand.

Hang your swimming bag on the wall.

An die Wand gives the destination, so use the accusative. Häng is a friendly instruction to one child.

  • Dein Schwimmbeutel hängt an der Wand.

Your swimming bag is hanging on the wall.

An der Wand describes the position, so use the dative. German uses hängt for both 'hangs' and 'is hanging'.

  • Stell deinen Schulranzen hinter den Stuhl.

Put your school bag behind the chair.

Stellen means to put something in an upright position. Hinter den Stuhl is an accusative destination.

  • Dein Schulranzen steht hinter dem Stuhl.

Your school bag is standing behind the chair.

Stehen describes an upright position. Hinter dem Stuhl uses the dative.

  • Stell deine Turnschuhe vor den Schrank.

Put your trainers in front of the cupboard.

German uses stellen for putting shoes down on their soles. Vor den Schrank gives an accusative destination.

  • Deine Turnschuhe stehen vor dem Schrank.

Your trainers are standing in front of the cupboard.

Turnschuhe is plural, so use stehen. Vor dem Schrank describes a dative position.

  • Häng dein Fußballbild über den Schreibtisch.

Hang your football picture above the desk.

Über den Schreibtisch gives the picture's destination: a place above the desk. Use the accusative.

  • Dein Lesebuch liegt zwischen dem Wörterbuch und dem Heft.

Your reading book is lying between the dictionary and the notebook.

Liegen describes the book's flat position. Both objects after zwischen use the dative: dem Wörterbuch and dem Heft.
