Setting up our class exhibition in German

Arrange a class exhibition together and check where everything is. Practise an, hinter, vor, über and zwischen with the accusative for destinations and the dative for positions.

What you'll learn

  • Suggest where to hang drawings and banners.
  • Place models and labels, then describe their positions.
  • Use accusative destinations with hängen, stellen and legen.
  • Use dative positions with hängen, stehen and liegen.

German phrases for setting up our class exhibition

  • Wollen wir deine Zeichnung an die Wand hängen?

Shall we hang your drawing on the wall?

An die Wand gives the destination: use the accusative.

  • Deine Zeichnung hängt an der Wand beim Eingang.

Your drawing is hanging on the wall by the entrance.

An der Wand describes where the drawing is hanging: use the dative.

  • Stell das Modell zwischen die beiden Stellwände.

Put the model between the two display boards.

Stellen means to put something in a standing position. Zwischen die beiden Stellwände gives the destination.

  • Das Modell steht jetzt zwischen den Stellwänden.

The model is standing between the display boards now.

Zwischen den Stellwänden describes the position and uses the dative plural.

  • Leg die Beschriftungen vor die Projekte.

Place the labels in front of the projects.

Legen means to put something down flat. Vor die Projekte gives the destination.

  • Die Beschriftungen liegen vor den Projekten.

The labels are lying in front of the projects.

Vor den Projekten describes the position. Projekte becomes Projekten in the dative plural.

  • Hängen wir das Banner über den Türrahmen.

Let's hang the banner above the doorway.

Über den Türrahmen gives the destination and uses the accusative. Türrahmen means doorframe, a natural reference point here.

  • Die übrigen Kartons stehen hinter der Trennwand.

The spare boxes are standing behind the screen.

Hinter der Trennwand describes the position and uses the dative. Here, the screen is a room divider.

Destination or position?

These five two-way prepositions take the accusative when you place something somewhere (wohin? — where to?). They take the dative when you describe its position (wo? — where?). The distinction is destination versus location, not simply movement versus no movement.

Choose the matching verb

Use stellen for placing something upright and legen for placing it flat. Their position partners are stehen and liegen. Hängen has the same infinitive for both placing and position. The case after the preposition shows the difference.
