Review: obwohl
Obwohl introduces a contrast and sends the finite verb to the end. If this clause comes first, the main-clause verb comes immediately afterward.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast | Obwohl … finite verb, main-clause verb + subject … | Obwohl die Aufgabe knifflig war, fand ich die Antwort. |
Review: common lexical Präteritum
Recall these familiar storytelling forms. For these verbs, the ich and er/sie singular forms are identical.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar forms | gehen → ging; kommen → kam; sehen → sah; finden → fand; geben → gab; nehmen → nahm | Ich sah die Maschine und nahm den Plan. |
| Finding and giving | ich fand; er gab | Ich fand die Antwort. Der Helfer gab uns einen Plan. |
Review: past-time als and wenn
Use als for one past event or period. Use wenn for repeated past occasions; immer wenn emphasizes 'whenever'. Both place the finite verb at the end of their clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One occasion | als + past event | Als wir in den Entdeckerraum kamen, gab uns ein Helfer einen Plan. |
| Repeated occasions | immer wenn + repeated past event | Immer wenn ich die Antwort fand, gab mir der Helfer ein weiteres Teil. |
Review: nominative relative clauses
Use der, die or das when the relative pronoun is the subject of the relative clause. Match it to the noun being described; plural uses die. The finite verb goes last.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Relative pronouns | masculine der; feminine die; neuter das; plural die | Ist das die Maschine, die riesige Seifenblasen macht? |
Review: Futur I
Use a form of werden plus a final infinitive to make an explicit future commitment or prediction.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Commitment | ich werde + … + infinitive | Ich werde es mit dem langen Holzgriff testen. |
Review: dative adjective endings
After a definite or indefinite article in the dative, attributive adjectives take -en. With mit dem langen Holzgriff, mit requires the dative.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular | mit dem/einem langen Holzgriff; mit der/einer großen Schüssel | Ich werde es mit einem langen Holzgriff testen. |
| Plural with a definite article | mit den großen Schüsseln | Ich werde es mit den großen Schüsseln testen. |
Review: destinations and positions
With two-way prepositions such as an, hinter, vor, über and zwischen, use the accusative for a destination and the dative for a position. Ask 'where to?' versus 'where?' rather than simply looking for movement.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Destination | legen + zwischen + accusative | Leg die Anleitungskarte zwischen die Schüsseln. |
| Position | liegen + zwischen + dative | Die Anleitungskarte liegt zwischen den Schüsseln. |
Review: während
Während connects actions happening at the same time. Its finite verb goes last. When the während clause comes first, the main clause starts with its finite verb.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simultaneous actions | Während … finite verb, main-clause verb + subject … | Während du das Rad drehst, werde ich das kleine Licht beobachten. |
Review: damit
Damit introduces the purpose of an action, especially when the two clauses have different subjects. The finite verb goes last in the damit clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose with different subjects | ich …, damit du … kannst | Ich werde den Deckel anheben, damit du hineinsehen kannst. |
