Während: actions that overlap
Während means while here. It shows that two actions overlap in time; they do not need to start and finish together. Unlike bevor (before) or bis (until), it focuses on what happens at the same time.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Two simultaneous tasks | main clause + während clause | Ich zähle die Punkte, während du die Karten sortierst. |
The finite verb comes last
In the während clause, put the finite verb—the verb that changes with the subject and tense—at the end. If there is a participle and an auxiliary, the finite auxiliary comes after the participle. Separate the clauses with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One verb | während + subject + other information + finite verb | während du den Hinweis liest |
| Past-tense verb group | während + subject + other information + participle + finite auxiliary | während du die Regeln überprüft hast |
Where to put the während clause
The während clause can come first or last. When it comes first, the main clause begins with its finite verb, followed by its subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Während clause last | main clause, während + subject + … + finite verb | Wir geben das Kissen weiter, während die Musik läuft. |
| Während clause first | Während + subject + … + finite verb, main-clause finite verb + subject + … | Während die Musik läuft, geben wir das Kissen weiter. |
