Details after with in German

Add useful details when describing drawing, writing and checking work. After mit and a definite or indefinite article, an adjective before a noun takes the ending -en.

What you'll learn

  • Describe tools and materials more precisely using mit.
  • Use -en on adjectives after dem, einem, der, einer and den.
  • Recognize the pattern in phrases such as mit dem dicken Bleistift and mit einer ruhigen Hand.

German phrases for details after with

  • Ich schreibe mit dem dicken Bleistift ordentlicher.

I write more neatly with the thick pencil.

    After dem, dick becomes dicken.

  • Kannst du mit einem dünnen Stift einen Kreis zeichnen?

Can you draw a circle with a thin pen?

After einem, dünn becomes dünnen. Stift is a general word for a writing or drawing tool.

  • Mit dem weichen Pinsel sehen die Linien anders aus.

With the soft brush, the lines look different.

Mit dem weichen Pinsel describes the tool: weich takes -en.

  • Mit etwas Hilfe kann ich das fertig machen.

Mit etwas Hilfe is the natural expression here. It contains no adjective, so it does not illustrate the -en pattern.

The picture looks brighter with the new crayons.

After plural den, neu becomes neuen. Wachsmalstifte also gains the dative plural ending -n.

With a steady hand, you can trace the edge.

After einer, ruhig becomes ruhigen. Eine ruhige Hand means a steady hand.

Try marking the route with a coloured arrow.

    After einem, farbig becomes farbigen.

  • Wir können die Antwort mit dem kleinen Taschenrechner überprüfen.

We can check the answer with the small calculator.

    After dem, klein becomes kleinen.

Mit takes the dative. When a describing adjective stands between a definite or indefinite article and the noun, it ends in -en. The article changes with the noun's gender or number, but this adjective ending stays the same.
