Creative Tool Choices in German

Help your child choose and describe tools for creative projects. Practise adjective endings after definite and indefinite articles in phrases with mit (with).

What you'll learn

  • Talk about drawing, painting and craft materials.
  • Use mit with the dative to describe which tool to use.
  • Use the adjective ending -en after definite and indefinite articles in the dative.
  • Recognise dative plural forms such as mit den neuen Stiften.

German phrases for creative tool choices

  • Du kannst den Umriss mit dem weichen Bleistift zeichnen.

You can draw the outline with the soft pencil.

Der Bleistift becomes dem Bleistift after mit; weich becomes weichen.

  • Versuch, den Baum mit einem weichen Bleistift zu schattieren.

Try shading the tree with a soft pencil.

Mit einem introduces a masculine tool that has not been specifically identified. The adjective still ends in -en.

  • Du kannst den Hintergrund mit dem breiten Pinsel malen.

You can paint the background with the wide brush.

Der Pinsel is masculine: mit dem breiten Pinsel.

  • Du kannst mit einem dünnen Pinsel kleine Details hinzufügen.

German uses the singular die Schere for a pair of scissors. After mit, use der scharfen Schere.

Das Lineal is neuter. Its dative indefinite article is einem, and lang becomes langen.

You can label the map with the new coloured pencils.

In the dative plural, die becomes den, neu becomes neuen, and Buntstifte gains -n.

  • Mit den bunten Bildern sieht dein Plakat interessanter aus.

With the colourful pictures, your poster looks more interesting.

Bilder becomes Bildern in the dative plural. Interessanter means more interesting.

Mit + dative: adjective endings

Mit always takes the dative. An adjective before a noun ends in -en after a definite article (dem, der, den) or an indefinite article (einem, einer) in the dative. The article changes according to the noun's gender and number.

UseFormExample

Remember the dative plural noun ending

Most plural nouns add -n in the dative unless they already end in -n or -s. This noun ending is separate from the adjective ending -en. There is no plural form of the indefinite article ein.
