German phrases for alongside each other
Während du an deinem Modell arbeitest, bereite ich das Abendessen vor.
While you work on your model, I will prepare dinner.
Arbeitest comes last in the während clause. Vorbereiten is separable: bereite … vor. German present tense naturally expresses this planned action.
Ich kann die Wäsche zusammenlegen, während du mir von deinem Tag erzählst.
I can fold the washing while you tell me about your day.
Erzählst comes last in the während clause. Mir means “to me”; von deinem Tag means “about your day.”
Während deine Schwester Gitarre übt, kannst du hier drin lesen.
While your sister practises the guitar, you can read in here.
After the opening während clause, the main clause begins kannst du, not du kannst. Hier drin means “in here.”
Deck bitte den Tisch, während ich das Gemüse schneide.
Please set the table while I cut the vegetables.
Deck is the informal singular imperative of decken. Bitte makes the request polite; schneide comes last in the während clause.
Während du einen Film aussuchst, mache ich Popcorn.
While you choose a film, I will make some popcorn.
Aussuchen stays together at the end of a subordinate clause: aussuchst. German does not need a separate word for “some” here.
Du kannst Musik hören, während du dein Zimmer aufräumst.
You can listen to music while you tidy your room.
The separable verb aufräumen stays together as aufräumst at the end of the während clause.
Während dein Freund unten wartet, kannst du deine Jacke holen.
While your friend waits downstairs, you can get your jacket.
Unten means “downstairs” here, and holen means “get” or “fetch.” For a female friend, use deine Freundin.
Ich schaue nach den Busfahrzeiten, während du zu Ende packst.
I will check the bus times while you finish packing.
Nach etwas schauen means “to check something.” Zu Ende packen means “to finish packing”; packst comes last.

Während connects simultaneous actions
Use während when two actions overlap in time. They do not need to begin or end together. Separate the während clause from the main clause with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Main clause first | Main clause, während + subject + … + finite verb. | Ich mache Popcorn, während du einen Film aussuchst. |
| Während clause first | Während + subject + … + finite verb, main-clause finite verb + subject + … | Während du einen Film aussuchst, mache ich Popcorn. |
The finite verb goes last
The finite verb is the verb form that agrees with the subject, such as du arbeitest or ich schneide. In a während clause, it goes at the end. Separable prefixes remain attached. With a modal verb, the infinitive comes before the finite modal.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary verb | während + subject + … + finite verb | während ich das Gemüse schneide |
| Separable verb | während + subject + … + prefix attached to finite verb | während du dein Zimmer aufräumst |
| Modal verb | während + subject + … + infinitive + finite modal | während deine Schwester Gitarre üben kann |
Main-clause word order after während
An opening während clause fills the first position of the whole sentence. The main-clause finite verb follows immediately after the comma, before the subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Without a modal | Während clause, finite verb + subject + … | Während du an deinem Modell arbeitest, bereite ich das Abendessen vor. |
| With a modal | Während clause, finite modal + subject + … + infinitive. | Während dein Freund unten wartet, kannst du deine Jacke holen. |
Während, bevor and bis
All three introduce subordinate clauses with the finite verb at the end, but they express different timing. Während means actions overlap, bevor puts one action before another, and bis marks an endpoint.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Während: while | Two actions overlap. | Ich koche, während du den Tisch deckst. |
| Bevor: before | One action happens before another. | Ich koche, bevor du nach Hause kommst. |
| Bis: until | An action continues up to an endpoint. | Ich warte, bis du nach Hause kommst. |
Present tense for planned actions
German often uses the present tense where English uses “will,” especially when the context makes the plan clear. Werden is not needed in these everyday arrangements.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Planned action | Present tense with a future meaning supplied by context. | Während du einen Film aussuchst, mache ich Popcorn. |
