Damit explains the purpose
A damit clause tells someone what an action is intended to make possible. It means “so that” and answers “For what purpose?” Separate it from the main clause with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Support + intended purpose | Main clause, damit + subject + ... + finite verb. | Ich bleibe in der Nähe, damit du um Hilfe bitten kannst. |
Different subjects
Damit is especially useful when one person acts so that someone else can do something. The purpose clause has its own subject, and its final verb agrees with that subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Parent → child | ich → damit du ... kannst | Ich stelle eine Frage, damit du den nächsten Schritt finden kannst. |
| Child → parent | du → damit ich ... kann | Kannst du langsam sprechen, damit ich deinem Gedanken folgen kann? |
| Shared action → eyes | Lass uns ... → damit ... deine Augen ... können | Lass uns eine kurze Pause machen, damit sich deine Augen ausruhen können. |
Put the finite verb last
The finite verb—the verb form that agrees with the subject—goes at the end of the damit clause. With können, put the action infinitive immediately before kann, kannst or können. Without a modal verb, the action verb itself comes last.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With a modal verb | damit + du + ... + anfangen + kannst | Ich lese die Aufgabenstellung vor, damit du anfangen kannst. |
| Without a modal verb | damit + du + ... + hast | Ich lasse etwas Platz frei, damit du genug Platz hast. |
