Always Beside You in German

Use gentle German promises to reassure your child during new experiences and everyday care. Futur I combines a form of werden with an infinitive to express explicit future commitments and predictions.

What you'll learn

  • Make reassuring promises using ich werde and wir werden.
  • Describe future discoveries and changes using du wirst and wird.
  • Place the infinitive at the end of the main clause.
  • Use wenn clauses to say when something will happen.

German phrases for always beside you

  • Ich werde während deiner Untersuchung an deiner Seite bleiben.

I will stay beside you during your check-up.

An deiner Seite bleiben means ‘to stay by your side’ and sounds reassuring. Während takes the genitive here: während deiner Untersuchung.

  • Wir werden deine Lieblingsdecke zum Arzt mitnehmen.

We will bring your favourite blanket to the doctor's.

Zum Arzt means ‘to the doctor’s’. Mitnehmen means ‘to take along’ and stays together as an infinitive.

  • Ich werde deine Milch nach unserem Spaziergang aufwärmen.

I will warm your milk after our walk.

Aufwärmen means ‘to warm up’. Nach takes the dative: nach unserem Spaziergang.

  • Dein neuer Zahn wird bald durchkommen.

Your new tooth will appear soon.

For a baby’s tooth, durchkommen naturally means ‘to come through’. The singular subject dein neuer Zahn takes wird.

  • Du wirst viele neue Dinge entdecken, wenn du krabbelst.

You will discover many new things when you crawl.

Use du wirst when speaking directly to your child. The wenn clause uses the present tense for a future situation.

  • Ich werde beim Baden deine Hand halten.

I will hold your hand during your bath.

Beim Baden means ‘while bathing’ or ‘during bath time’. Baden has a capital letter because it is used as a noun.

  • Wir werden vor dem Schlafengehen dein Bilderbuch lesen.

We will read your picture book before bedtime.

Vor dem Schlafengehen means ‘before going to bed’. Vor takes the dative in this time expression.

  • Du wirst meine Stimme hören, wenn du aufwachst.

You will hear my voice when you wake up.

In the wenn clause, aufwachst goes at the end. Unlike in a main clause, its separable prefix auf- remains attached.
