The Missing Sketchbook in German
Tell “The Missing Sketchbook” together as a small everyday mystery. Use common German verbs in the Präteritum to describe where your brother went, what happened and how you found his sketchbook.
What you'll learn
- Tell a short story using ging, kam, sah, fand, gab and nahm.
- Recognise that ich and er/sie/es share the same Präteritum forms for these verbs.
- Use time expressions to put events in order.
- Use mitnehmen and zurückgeben correctly in past-tense sentences.
German phrases for the missing sketchbook
Gestern ging dein Bruder ins Jugendzentrum.
Yesterday, your brother went to the youth centre.
Ging is the Präteritum of gehen. When Gestern comes first, the verb comes next, followed by the subject.
Er nahm sein Skizzenbuch mit.
He took his sketchbook with him.
Mitnehmen is separable: nahm stays in the normal verb position, and mit goes at the end.
Am Eingang sah er einen Freund aus seiner Kunstgruppe.
At the entrance, he saw a friend from his art club.
Sah is the Präteritum of sehen. Einen Freund is accusative because the friend is the person he saw.
Sein Freund gab ihm einen neuen Bleistift.
His friend gave him a new pencil.
Gab is the Präteritum of geben. Ihm identifies the recipient; einen neuen Bleistift identifies the thing given.
Später kam er ohne das Skizzenbuch nach Hause.
Later, he came home without the sketchbook.
Kam is the Präteritum of kommen. Nach Hause means movement home; ohne takes the accusative.
Ich ging zurück ins Jugendzentrum.
I went back to the youth centre.
Ich ging and er ging use the same verb form. Zurück means “back.”
Ich fand das Skizzenbuch unter einem Stuhl.
I found the sketchbook under a chair.
Fand is the Präteritum of finden. Unter einem Stuhl uses the dative because it describes the book’s location.
Beim Abendessen gab ich es deinem Bruder zurück.
At dinner, I gave it back to your brother.
Zurückgeben separates into gab … zurück. Es refers to das Skizzenbuch, and deinem Bruder is the dative recipient.

Präteritum for storytelling
The Präteritum is common in written stories and story-style retellings. In everyday conversation, German speakers often use the Perfekt for these actions. These six verbs have irregular past-tense stems. Their ich and er/sie/es forms are identical.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| gehen — to go | ich ging; du gingst; er/sie/es ging | Dein Bruder ging ins Jugendzentrum. |
| kommen — to come | ich kam; du kamst; er/sie/es kam | Er kam nach Hause. |
| sehen — to see | ich sah; du sahst; er/sie/es sah | Er sah einen Freund. |
| finden — to find | ich fand; du fandest; er/sie/es fand | Ich fand das Skizzenbuch. |
| geben — to give | ich gab; du gabst; er/sie/es gab | Sein Freund gab ihm einen Bleistift. |
| nehmen — to take | ich nahm; du nahmst; er/sie/es nahm | Er nahm sein Skizzenbuch mit. |
Putting story events in order
Start with a time or place expression to guide your listener. In a statement, the conjugated verb stays in the second position. The opening expression can contain more than one word.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Time first | Time expression + verb + subject + … | Später kam er nach Hause. |
| Place first | Place expression + verb + subject + … | Am Eingang sah er einen Freund. |
Separable verbs in the Präteritum
In a main clause, conjugate the base verb and put the separable prefix at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| mitnehmen | nahm … mit | Er nahm sein Skizzenbuch mit. |
| zurückgeben | gab … zurück | Ich gab es deinem Bruder zurück. |
Giving something to someone
With geben and zurückgeben, the recipient is dative and the thing given is accusative.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient | dative: ihm / deinem Bruder | Ich gab deinem Bruder das Skizzenbuch zurück. |
| Thing given | accusative: einen neuen Bleistift / das Skizzenbuch / es | Sein Freund gab ihm einen neuen Bleistift. |
