Obwohl: although
Obwohl introduces a fact that contrasts with the main statement. Both statements are true: feeling nervous or shy does not prevent taking part. Separate the obwohl clause from the main clause with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Main statement first | Main clause, obwohl + subject + ... + finite verb. | Ich möchte mitmachen, obwohl ich schüchtern bin. |
| Contrasting fact first | Obwohl + subject + ... + finite verb, main-clause finite verb + subject + ... . | Obwohl ich schüchtern bin, möchte ich mitmachen. |
The finite verb goes last in the obwohl clause
The finite verb is the verb that changes to match the subject. Put it at the end of the obwohl clause. If the clause contains an auxiliary and a participle, the finite auxiliary comes last.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One verb | obwohl + subject + ... + finite verb | obwohl deine Stimme leise ist |
| Auxiliary and participle | obwohl + subject + ... + participle + finite auxiliary | obwohl du ein Wort ausgelassen hast |
An opening obwohl clause changes main-clause order
When the obwohl clause comes first, it fills the first position of the sentence. The main-clause finite verb follows immediately after the comma, before the subject. Do not use ordinary subject–verb order there.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb before subject | Obwohl ..., bin ich ... . | Obwohl ich meinen Text kenne, bin ich nervös. |
| With a modal verb | Obwohl ..., kann ich ... + infinitive. | Obwohl der Saal voll ist, kann ich dich sehen. |
| With an auxiliary | Obwohl ..., bist du ... + participle. | Obwohl es schwierig war, bist du auf der Bühne geblieben. |
